[bolger] Re: Epoxy over exterior latex?

I've used the UV activated Bondo. It's a real creamy texture and doesn't set up until UV hits it. You can't thicken with anything because the UV needs to penetrate but for minor fairing up 1/8" thick, it works great. You can work it for 20 minutes or more in shade, then roll out to the sun and in 10 minutes it's hard and your can continue sanding. (Or use a UV grow light) I've used it for several years now for minor fairing and it seems to stick well to epoxy and paint as long as both have cured well and sanded lightly! (10 days or more). Makes fairing fast and easy compared to thickened epoxy or quick setting Bondo.

Recently I used the UV Bondo on my mast which had small holes and gouges I needed to fill. So far it has held up to the constant flexing without cracks or flaking off.

fairing process with great success. Beats the H out of waiting for
epoxy to cure. This works well as long as it's not strucural which it
haint. My advice is to place some bondo on an already painted area
that has latex paint on it, let it cure for a day and try to remove it
any way you can. If it comes off hard, it will more than likely work.
Don"t try a newly painted area as even latex paint gets more tough with
age. The minimum time would be ten days cure at low humidity. I have
been a painter for years and learned that long cured latex, high vinyl
content paint sticks on real well. I suggest not using the side of
your house as a test bed if you want to stay married. Success with the
bond may spell the opposite on a personal level. Brad

Hi everyone,

I wondering if epoxy will adhere to Exterior latex for the purpose of
some minor fairing. I would like to make the outside hull of my
folding schooner look a bit better. Naturaly I would have done this
before the paint went on in the first place, but I purchased it this
way. Does the paint need to come off for the epoxy to adhere? If so,
would anyone reccomend bondo? or something else? I really hate to
think that the only way to fair the hull is to take the paint all the
way down. Please someone tell me it ain't so!

Hoping for an alternative,
Charles Correia.
