Re: Elegant Punt Underway
I agree wholeheartedly -- Punts rule!
I built one of these for my son when he was eight, didn't use
resin/glass for the same reason, so that he could help build. He
managed to pound in a few nails when we put the bottom on I pre-
drilled the holes) and was pretty pleased with the finished boat.
I use it more than he does now, it makes a great tender -- fairly
stable for its size and a good load carrier.
I made the sail as designed, it looked pretty big for the boat, so a
smaller one might be better for kids. I made provision for a reef in
mine, but its a nuisance reefing as the sail is lashed to the mast.
Definitely a shore job to reef. Alan had some trouble getting the
boat to turn "left", probably due to having both the leeboard and
sprit boom on the "bad" side. We never worked very hard at refining
it, but its fun to sail.

Howard,
Glad to see someone else building a punt.
My daughter is 5 and is looking forward to "her" boat.
I haven't decided on the rig yet, but would like
something with a lower center of effort for stability.
So, a lug rig may fit the bill.
I decided to glass mostly to give my Dad ( who is
helping with this one) some experience with glass as
he is starting to build a cedar strip canoe and wants
some experience (or experimentation) with glass and
epoxy.
I plan to do the seat and the bottom on Sunday, I'll
post some more pictures then.

good morning bill
i am in last stages of building my own "punt". not having touched
tools for 30 odd yrs i have built this one as a precursor to building
a larger boat.
i am not glassing mine, have just used good quality marine paint. i
have left the interior empty as at 6'2" i find the hull a trifle
short. sides i made of 6mm ply and bottom of 9mm, the ply being
imported gaboon. i have made my own gudgeons and pintles from 6mm
aluminium, and the mast is a second-hand windsurfer which i am going
to cut down.
i have been a bit concerned about a 15' stick in such a small hull,
the rig being identical to that in "teal", another bolger design and
substantially bigger. either teal is undercanvassed or punt is over
canvassed, therefore i decided to change the rig to a balanced lug,
of equivalent sail size.
appart from all that, fun to build, and eventually my (presently) 5yr
old grandson shall have a gift, along with some instruction.
regards, howard

Thanks.
Total time wise is hard to say. To mark out and cut
the transoms, sides and bottom I would say 3 hours.
To attach the sides and glue them, maybe 1.5 hr.
Attaching gunwales, 1hr.
Attacheing chines and bottom 2hr.
Miscellaneous pondering and waiting for glue to dry:
??
So, maybe 8hrs of active work so far.
It has been a fun project so far. My Dad is visiting
so has been helping out. It is his first boat project
and only my second, so some of the above time is
learning time.

Bill, looks good. I'm curious how much time it took you to get to this
point. My wife has been helping me with some of the more onerous tasks while
building our micro and got bitten by the boatbuilding bug. She's decided she
wants to build a boat on her own, without my help, start to finish. After
talking to me about it and flipping through my copy of 'Instant Boats', last
week she sent off to Payson for plans for the Elegant Punt. They arrived
Friday, I picked up the wood Saturday, we set up a space for her in the shop
Sunday, and if it stays this cold over the upcoming long weekend, she'll
probably start making some sawdust.
We spent awhile Sunday going over the plans, and it became apparent to me
how truly 'elegant' this boat is in its simplicity. I think it'll be an
excellent beginner's project. I quickly discovered that her biggest
challenge by far will be in learning to cope with feet, inches, quarters,
eights, as she grew up in a 'metric' country. I've been dealing with our
archaic system all my life and take it for granted, but when I had to start
explaining it to her in enough detail to build a boat off of scaled plans, I
began to wonder for the first time - who came up with this? I wonder what
ever happened to all the talk back in the '70's about the US switching to
metric...
