Well said Bruce

I concur, at least not on any tack and tape I've built.

Take a straight piece of wood,
and mark inches, and 1/4 inches
on it with a pen.

No need for 1/8 inches, not on
any tack and tape boat anyway.
Buy a tape with inches and metric on the same side. Stanley makes
one, and many I've seen in Canada are that way.

Also a big drywall workers T square makes laying out the 1 foot
stations easy. Barring that, make one out of scrap wood.

Good luck with the Diablo. I love mine, and it's a simple boat to
build. Just bang on regardless and get lots of Duct tape. But I'll
bet your carpentry skills are way ahead of mine. Maybe you can
temporaily cover your seam gaps with Scotch tape.

Oh, and YES, I'd love to see your photos. Better yet collect them
into a photo-journal of the build and send it over to Chuck at

I have just started a Diablo, (pictures possible if anyone is
interested). I'm building it from Payson's book and am battling with
the measurements. Although I'm old enough to remember the imperial
system, a few years of building houses cured me of it. It's also hard
to get anything to use as a measuring stick, my wife's dressmaking
tape has inches on the back but it's far from ideal.
It's a bit like trying to find stagecoach parts in the age of the
automobile. I'm using a calculator to convert to millimetres, but
it's a tedious process. If anyone overcome this problem, I'ld love to
hear about it.
