Re: [bolger] Sculling oar for Sea Angel.
Steve,
You don't need a yuloh, just a fairly long bladed oar. Hold it over the
stern at a fairly steep angle, and move it sideways with the leading
edge angled 30 to 45 degrees toward the bow of the boat, then then move
it sideways in the other direction and twist it so the other edge of the
blade (the new leading edge) is toward the bow. In fact, if you have a
canoe paddle, you can sit on the dock and work the motions and twist out
for yourself in 20 minutes or so.
I think "Wooden Boat" had an article some time back on sculing with a
regular oar.
Good luck,
Ford Walton

Trying to search the archives for info on sculling oars. I have an
extra oarlock that I want to put on the transom of my Featherwind
and see if I can scull. I can't remember how to spell Yulo (Yuloh)
(youlow)(ewelough) (???)
I've seen posts on them and seem to remember construction details on
some websites but it all escapes me at the moment. Premature
senility has set in since my 59th B-day last Friday.

Steve, I found some useful information on this page (from www.
simplicityboats.com)
http://www.simplicityboats.com/yulohpage.html
There are several links and I know one of them gives a good
description of how to scull. Hope this helps.
