I have a Black Skimmer; love it -- tho it sits on her trailer a bit more now
that I also have an Irwin 43 center-cockpit sloop (bought for Bahamas
cruise, and trucked out to Pacific NW)
My solution for the leeboards was to build "davits" to allow for
block&tackle raising of the windward board during the tack -- the davits
are actually simple 1 x 4 lumber bolted to inside of cockpit sides,
well-braced forward with triangulation. these stick up about 12", gives a
decent purchase to connect the tackle for raising the board... the way I've
set it up, there's still only one thin line submerged down to the center of
the leeboard; not much hydrodynamic resistance. The actual rigging is a bit
complex, but if interested I could either photo it or sketch it. When all's
set up, I can raise either board by pulling the tail-end from virtually
anywhere in the cockpit (other end of the tackle is attached well-forward on
the cabin roof, actually to the leeboard's pivot-timbers)
Sure beats hoisting the pennant straight upwards! that WAS a
back-breaker....
