Re: homebuilt boat insurance
Peter -
At least I take some comfort that you have received the same letters
as I have from the Insurance Companies. I too have done the survey /
file a report with the company and got that same rely that since it
is not a commercial product they could not insure.
funny thing is though...The fiberglass boat will sink as fast or
faster than my wooden one, and as you said...if I built it, I can
probably fix it!

These letters are kept in a nice clean envelope and taken out

Roger,
I believe this requirement might stem from the possibility of having to
raise a sunken or burned boat; liability wouldn't cover this. Hull
insurance also seems to suggest less possibility of abandonment.

I can see where they might want you to have liability insurance (attractive
nuisance like a swimming pool), but why would they care if you had hull

When I went to insure my homebuilt boat I was shocked at how
hard it was to get anyone to even consider insuring it (I wanted
liability and replacement coverage). I did find one or two firms
that would think about it if I would have it surveyed 1st, but I
didn't think that was worth the cost. I finally checked with USAA
who has my car insurance. Low and behold, they didn't have any
trouble with it! Should have gone there 1st!!!

Our marina only requires liability. I've got that and hull loss, plus a $20
rider puts the big boat under the umbrella on my homeowners. My AF4 is
covered under my homeowners, agent says 50 HP and under doesn't need a
separate policy for liability coverage.

Every marina out here that I've encountered requires the owner carry
liability insurance...
Like Steve said, I bet getting insurance varies by state and insurance
carrier. My homeowners/auto in CA will allow only certain types of boats
for the watercraft liability. They have a booklet with black and white
drawings of various boat types, showing what is insurable and what they
won't touch. I had to bring in photos of my boat and help them find
mine.... A daysailer or small open fishing boats are OK, while those
high horsepower bassboats and wakeboarder boats have a big red X
through them...
A friend got his Diablo insured with a nationwide marine insurer because
we took care to register his boat as not homebuilt. Self built boats can
be registered here as HMBLT (Homebuilt) or SPCNS (Special Construction).
By choosing SPCNS as the "builder" it's considered a custom built boat.
For some reason it's more acceptable to the insurance folks...
Perhaps you could set up a small business on paper and have that company
build the boat, give the boat an official make, model etc. and then
sell it to you. Maybe the "company" would loose money and you get a
business loss on your personal taxes???

Just for grins and giggles I did a boat quote online with Progressive
Insurance company, one of the companies I represent. They actually
will insure homemade boats for liability only!!! I used my Michalak
AF4 Grande for the quote.
At least it is an option. Most independent agents in the country
represent progressive.

I'm an insurance agent but I have specialized in auto insurance for
the past 10 years. I believe however that you can get liability type
coverage attached to you homeowners policy. There are certain
restrictions such as max 25 hp and maybe a length restriction. I
would check with your agent because each state may be different. It
is called watercraft liability. Also your motor, radio, etc. are
covered as part of your homeowners contents coverage up to a certain
maximum value away from your home. No hull coverage however.

boat does harm to them. I doubt they care if you suffer loss. Look at
buying liability coverage only. It should be cheap and your design
should not matter since it would not cover any damage to or loss of
your boat.
You may already have a personal umbrella type liability policy that
will cover you and and all your stuff for when the mailman trips on
your boat or a tree limb falls on him. That may satisfy the marina.
That is the type of policy outside contractors have to have when they
work at our company site (or at a marina).
Charles
David, I second the motion. This has been a sticking point fo me too! I wonder if some of the Old Sages could shed some light on this. This especially becomes an issue if one noticably deviates from the designers plans.
