I have called their toll-free number and got excellent information
about the locations of suppliers near me and even what kind of
products of their were mostly purchased by the supplier. They
mentioned that 20 or so sheets of Crezon could likely be added to a
dearlers order of other stuff, like concrete forms and would lessen
the shipping costs.

Cheers, Nels
FYI - In my part of the country (Peterborough, Ontario) you're more
likely to have success finding MDO if you ask about Crezon. Go
figure.

Hi Paul,

Do you have any sources for MDO?

Tom
Vince & Paul,

Thanks for the advice.

Tom

Tom,

Any local lumber yard -- as opposed to Home Depot or Lowes
should be happy to get MDO for you. The big box stores might
special order it, too, but I have never seen it in stock. I like
working with the local guys. I paid about $35 to $38 USD at
various times in the past 3 years for 1/2" good both sides. I have
used MDO exclusively for Dakota.

See "Dakota" on the <Files> section and "Vince's Dakota" in the
<Photos> section.

Vince
I use Harbor Plywood in Suidlersville, MD. Any good lumberyard should be
able to order it for you. Failing that, check with a local sign shop and see
where they get theirs from.

Paul
Hi Paul,

Do you have any sources for MDO?

Tom

Hi Grant,

I've used MDO exclusively, in rebuilding the inside of my and my daughter's
boats. In fact, you can see some of the MDO I've used in this month's issue
of SAIL (Feb) in the cabin sole article. If I'm using it for cabinets or
bulkheads, I use the finished two side stuff. If I'm bonding it to
something, I use the good one side stuff. Minimal, if any, voids and the
finished sides take paint or epoxy extremely well.

The October, 2003 issue of Good Old Boat had my article on redoing the
overhead in my main cabin, using 1/2" MDO as a base for teak trim and vinyl
covered, Velcro-retained overhead panels.

Hope this helps...

You definitely don't want to use the concrete stuff -- its actually HDO,
not MDO (high density overlay versus medium density overlay).

The high density stuff has a surface that nothing sticks to, including
paint, and as such is not much good for anything other than what they use
it for.

The medium density stuff is available finished one or both sides, from
various manufacturers. I plan on using finished-one-side MDO for my boat,
inside & out.

There are varying qualities of MDO. The best I've seen is premium stuff
specifically built for highway signage and is double-faced. The worst I've
seen is single-faced, produced for concrete forms (it had voids and knots).
Prices seem to be relative to quality, although that's not to be taken as a
constant. Caveat emptor.....

Would anyone care to comment on using MDO as a substitute for marine
plywood? I am considering using it for the cabin and bulkheads on my
project.
