Re: Black Skimmer (and other cat-yawls) rigging ideas

Leo: appropriate bolts for those plastic/SSTL fairleads are pretty small
(8-32, as I remember, 10-24 at the largest), and it'll be easy to
counter-bore a larger diameter hole maybe 1/8 inch deep at the underside
where the bolt emerges, so the nut itself can thereby be completely
countersunk. You could even "fill in" around the countersunk nut with epoxy
(and microballoons?) so the nut is forever held captive... and even then
round off" the underside of the boomkin as much as possible, till there's
simply nothing of an "edge" left to catch the mizzen sheet.

Another idea I haven't yet tried, is to put the fairlead sticking out aft,
that is, flush to the very aft-facing tip of the boomkin, thus with the
fairlead's hole running vertical (not horizontal as I did)... fasten with
long screws right into the end-grain of the boomkin wood...of course, then
your sheet would have to be led forward UNDER the boomkin to the transom ...

Try it till it works better than before, then LET US ALL KNOW ABOUT YOUR
SUCCESSES!

Subject: Thank you

for the comments about rigging your Black Skimmer. I'm in the process
of re-fitting my Martha Jane, which has the evil tendency to wrap the
mizzen sheet around the boomkin. So I like your idea of bolting a
quality fairlead to the end of the boomkin. But just how do you bolt it
without the bolt or nuts snagging the sheet? Thanks, Leo
Smith
