Re: Viking Ships, the real ones

Extremely cool, and litereraly also, by the look of some of those photos.

Almost made me homesick for the Canadian winter. Almost!

Thanks Daniel.

Hello

With all this talk about Viking Ships and beer, I can't resist
reporting from the true land of the Vikings, Norway. Here, I am a
member of a club called Arctandria, which owns several real, live
viking ships, or Norlandsbater as they call them here. I see them
sailing from my front window fairly regularly. The boats are built
in the traditional fashion, by members. Ballast is rocks. They are
coated with tar and smell great. They even make up the ropes
themselves. You can see their boats at their website (in Norwegian):

Originally, the Vikings used tightly woven wool for sales. However
this is extremely laborious and expensive to make these days, so
canvas is used, except on a few replicas.

If you ever get the chance, visit the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo,
where they have several ships that were dug out of royal graves.
While you're at it you can visit the polar ships Fram and Gjoa. Even
better, visit the Viking Ship Museum at Roskilde near Copenhagen in
Denmark, where you can watch workers building replica ships in the
traditional manner.
