Actually, they may well be mutually exclusive, as 10X displacement should
probably lead to rendering the scope factor meaningless.....

If your anchor weighs at least 10x the displacement and your scope is less
than 1:1, I believe your biggest problem will be sinking, not drifting! ;-)

Oh, and here's another: if your scope is less than 1:1, you will drift.
Can't pass it up. I would submit that in 999 out of 1000 cases an anchor
can be devised which will hold a boat in any conditions which that boat
is strong enough to take, provided that the water is less than 20 boat
lengths deep and the anchor is allowed to weigh at least 10 times the
displacement or 300 lbs., whichever is more. To be limited to usable
boats, of course, even though this anchor wouldn't be...

Oh, and here's another: if your scope is less than 1:1, you will drift.

No, no.... I meant, you wouldn't have it WITH you at the time..... still,
the 300 lb anchor DOES sound attractive as long as I'm not the one picking
it up!

The Navy had a lovely anchor that I saw many years back. It largely
revolved around the propellant from a 5-inch shell inside a device dropped
over the side that exploded on contact with the bottom (no, I do NOT know
how it knew when to explode on contacting a squishy bottom), driving an
expanding anchor into the guck. The intent was to create a serviceable
mooring in a hurry, not to be used as a casual anchoring device. Still, I
always thought it had great merit: sail into a lovely lagoon, drop the
'device', meet ALL your neighbors and harvest plenty of fish for dinner in
one brief and exciting interlude. After a grand entrance like that, I
guarantee NOBODY is going to swing into YOUR boat, no matter what
adjustments may be necessitated in either their scope or location. Sigh...
I suppose we really can't do that sort of thing, much like using jetskiers
as a substitute for sporting clays is frowned upon these days in the more
'civilized' locales.

I was just filing some of my plans, and came across Design #526, for
a 20' dory. It was one of the old Elrow LaRowe designs. PCB had
added a VERY carefully inked note on the first sheet, saying:

"It's possible to rig this boat to sail, and to mount an outboard
motor. She will be a poor performer under sail, worse under power,
and will be more or less degraded for rowing in each case. Designer
won't cooperate in the process. PCB"

That's about as straightforward a piece of advice as any man could
desire, IMHO.

David Romasco

Now, he didn't SPECIFICALLY rule out inboard power.....
