Re: june bug question

June Bug is indeed very easy to build. Bee-Held, my JB was built in a very
cramped workspace, appox. 6 ft width of shop floor space. I won't do that
again, especially since I already did it again (Gypsy was built in the same
inadequate shop). I strongly encourage you to allow yourself more room than
this if possible. I also second or third the suggestion of getting both of
Payson's Instant Boat books. The chapter on JB in New Instant Boats along
with Payson's step-by-step for Teal at the end of Instant Boats, especially
if you splurge the $35US for the plans, will give you near fool-proof
guidance for building the boat with minimal moaning.

Yes, exceedingly simple, and it's a fast little boat.

Also worth getting is the
earlier book "Instant Boats".

Agreed. Second hardest part:
Resisting the temptation to
change things on the design.

Third hardest (for some people):
...is resisting the urge to build
the 'swiss watch' boat and/or
the 'armor plated' boat that might
outlive yourself.

Most boats, and especially the
Instant Boat type, tolerate rough
edges and measurements to a 'half
an inch' accuracy.

Use epoxy glue, but sheathing with
fiberglass is not always needed.

You might consider a quickie first
boat as a learning experience. Then
take what you learn and build a
better quality second (& third) boat.

Building a scale model is sometimes
helpful but don't waste time on a
fancy one, cardboard and duct tape
work fine.
Pick up a copy of Harold H. 'Dynamite' Payson's "Build the New Instant
Boats" from a library, a bookstore, Amazon, or Half.com. It gives a pretty
detailed step-by-step of the process of building a June Bug complete with
photos. You could also build right from the plans in the book, but I still
suggest springing for the actual blueprints.

It's going to be very easy to build. The hardest part for most people is
starting. Once you make the first part, be it a stem, a transom, or a
bulkhead, the rest is easy.

I have never built a boat from Bolger plans before, how complete and
detailed are they? Is june bug easy to build for a beginner?

Hello James. I could talk about JB's charms all day. Some on this group may
roll their eyes and groan to see my name attached to a message with a june
bug subject line, so I'll keep it short. JB is surprisingly fast. My wife
has repeatedly left me in the dust in our Gypsy while she sailed the JB.
Mind you I've yet to trade boats with her and do a re-match for fear it will
confirm what I already know (she's a better sailor). But Phil Lee's JB beat
a pack of Wind Sprints in the 2000 Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Festival races. He
used the conventional sprit boom rig with a slighly larger sail (66 sq. ft.
rather than 59). Let me know if you have any other specific questions. All
the best.

I have been contemplating building a june bug, but I have a
question. I have read several accounts of the boats stability but
how fast is she?

Thanks,
James
