Re: home made sails

i am glad someone else has economies to consider when sail-making.
i have an elegant punt, and made a lugsail for that from two kingsize
bedsheets which i tanned in a bucket of tea. but at 57sqft the sail
was too big (although that is the size of the recommended leg-o-
mutton)and i recut to 45sqft, new grommets, the lot, and the punt is
a lot more comfortable. i consider the trial to be successful and
am now going to have a professionally cut copy made, of dacron.

regards, howard

I recently found a big cruiser headsail at the Tip and decided to
cut it up to make some sailsfor the june Bug. the cloth was
dacron ,about 15 years old, well looked after.
I was really pleased to find that contact adhesive works really wel
on sailcloth. betterthan any other clothnIve used.
In 1 morning I cut and glued 3 lug sails for the june bug and a main
for the folding schooner. cost was $5.00 for the cloth at the tip .
$2.00 for glue, $2.50 for eyelets.
Yes thats right 3 lug sails for the june bug . after re-readinga
story on a nigel Irens daysailerI thought what fun it would be to add
a third mast right on the bow and hoist more sail .
she now looks truely piratical under sail and still handles well in
a breeze. when sailing with fore and mizzen you can steer by standing
up and moving your body. it leaves heaps of room for kids too. yes I
took photos , yes i will post asap.

capitan of the 3 masted Biscay lugger'Botany Bay'

ps Bruce the swells were manageable, but there was one that fair on
put the wind up me as it approached. as we ran up its face I kicked
the stern to run on top of the swell rather than just straight up and
down. it was at this point the kidsasked to go back
