Re: new micro photos

Peter -

It was I the eternal optimist that stated she might not be that much
more work. However, you are correct that there is a lot of internal
carpentry involved. The good news is that unless the cabinets and
drawers are structural, you can complete them as you are enjoying
the boat!

The drawings for the AS 29 have 2000 of ballast. I have to agree
that the ability to lower the masts in tabernacles is quite
desirable. It makes maintenance a tad easier as well.

The idea of a floating cottage may work for the retirement years. I
should be up for a slip at the municipal marina by then. At last
calculations that would be a little over 10 years on the waiting
list.

In a MAIB article, there was a discussion of the ballasting. The
jist, IIRC, being that after experimentation, the two owners (USA and
AUS) felt the designed amount was about right. I forget the weight of
ballast, but it's substantial.

If you really need a shorter mast, I stongly suspect you could adapt
the lug rig that PCB designed for Black Skimmer.

In an earlier post, someone suggested that AS-29 might be not too
much more work. Usually, I look at weight differences and the ratio
7200/5200 suggests that AS-29 is 38% more work. There is a lot more
built-in furniture in AS-29, which is much more time-consuming per
pound than hull structure. But it's a vacation cottage, not an
overnight lean-to.

Strange, but I too have found myself somewhat taken by Red Zinger ever
since I saw that collection of photos of one for sale at
Duckflats.....I wonder if that electric-lime-rip-the-eyes-right-out-
of-their-sockets-green hull colour scheme doesn't have something to
do with it on some hidden level of consciousness. That is,so startling
that images are forever burnt in my few remaining memeory cells.
I fear that she has bumped the venerable AS-29 down on the list
of"next boat to build when I am overcome with ennui from too much
easy living on board WINDERMERE".
My only reservation is a concern about that tall mast which cannot be
quickly nor too easily lowered like on board the AS-29.
I would dearly love to see the whole building plans for this boat
instead of that little bit already published in BWAOM and also to
know if she has any ballast. Anyone with a plan set willing to send
me a copy strictly for study and not to build?

Thanks for sharing the lovely photos. Notice how the logo on the sail
almost exactly mirrors the boat image in the first photo?

When a person looks at those two photos and then pans down to see the
basic "cutouts" that form the boat and the amount of space they
enclose when they are stood upright... well it boggles the mind...
how so much boat can come out of those relatively simple pieces of
plywood!

This has to be one of the best all round designs for the DIY boat
builder. Cute kid too!

Cheers, Nels
As they say in comedy, "Timing is everything." The short answer is
yes. The long answer is not for at least a year or so...While Red
Zinger has a strange attraction, I am thinking that the AS29 would
not be considerably more difficult and result in a much more
practical boat for my purposes. We will be building a pair of Pointy
Skiffs this summer for local lake rowing and fishing. One of my
son's friends has taken an interest in boatbuilding and is an avid
fisherman.

Jeese David, she sure looked fine.....would have been a real treat had
we been able to both be at the Lake Champlain Messabout at the same
time with our MICROs for some serious sailing-in-company fun.We could
have even switched boats and watched our respective boats sailing
along from another MICRO.......weird.......!
Better still would have been to have both you and Paul with your
MICROs......WOW......nothin' could have stopped us then :-)
Are you still contemplating another boatbuilding project like an AS-
29 or RED ZINGER? You gotta know that after building one lovely boat
it kinda gets under your skin and to never build another boat becomes
a living hell.

Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan,big Micro fan............
I bought these sails used from the fellow who converted to a Micro to
a Navigator model.

Nice shots, Dave. Is that a 'micron' symbol on the sail in the top photo?
I've been contemplating adding one to my sail, is there actually an
'official' micro sail symbol I should know about?

I just received these photos of Firefly just before I sold her a
couple of years ago. These were taken by a kind neighbor on a
nearby dock and then sent to my friend in Bar Harbor to send to me!

Enjoy. The boat really was a lot of fun, and half the work of my
current catboat!
