Re: Cost of Sails & Paint for Gypsy
Tim, I concur with Paul, I bought What was labled Polyurethane Floor
and porch paint. It has done a great job, the finish on my gypsy is
good but not as good as it could be, but I prefer actually sailing to
sanding.

Tim,
I expect you have heard it before, but with all the work you have put
into your boat, don't skimp on the paint. Good paint is probably
worth paying for and a bad paint job is discouraging at best.
That said, it seems people have had good luck with everything from
house paint to expensive marine or even automotive paints. I think
preparation is the key.
If I were you, I would consider Kirby paint. The company has a good
reputation for marine paints, they can be ordered over the internet
and the cost is about the same as house paint.
For many an opinion, check the forum over at Woodenboat.com.
Good Luck

California Paints Troubleshooter Primer works very well unless they've
changed the formulation or I don't remember right. I admit it's only
been two or three years. But I wonder if you even need primer at all?

Find a "high build" primer compatible with whatever finish paint you
use. It will fill all the little defects left by the epoxy. It should
easily sand smooooth as glass in prep for the finish coat. This is where
to spend your time on sanding, (but here it's easy) maybe tint the
primer on a second coat to highlight the few low spots. (It also has to
be computable with epoxy) I've had great success with Benjamin Moore's
"Fresh Start" a high build latex primer designed to cover graffiti on
almost any surface..

Paul,
I was considering a similar approach but am not sure
about the primer. Should the primer be anything
special?

The sail for Gypsy is one of the best deals around. You can get a really
nice sail from either HH Payson or Bohndell sailmakers for $175. There's no
reason I can think of not to buy one from them.

with "porch and floor" paint bought from Home Depot - I don't
remember what it cost, but it was far less expensive than marine
paint and seems to hold up quite well.
Paul
Good Morning,
As you know, I am getting close to finishing Gypsy.
However, I am running low on money so I am trying to
figure out what costs I can expect to finish her. I
think I have enough epoxy to finish and the two
remaining large purchases are the sails and the paint.
Could you folks share *about* how much you paid for
each so I can get an idea of what to expect?
Thanks,
