Motorwell question

This is cross-posted with the Michalak group. Sorry to those in both;
I thought I might find some helpful Bolgerites who aren't on that
list.

I've never had a boat with a motor, nor a motorwell. I'm not really
sure how it all works -- so forgive my ignorance here. Cormorant is
designed with a motorwell. It's as wide as the whole end of the boat
(5'+) and about 13" or 14" fore and aft.

When Jim originally said the boat would have a motorwell, I imagined
a free-flooding compartment in which the outboard actually was
mounted, with the propellor sticking out through a hole in the
bottom. But now I see that really the motor gets mounted on the
transom, on a motorboard, hanging out off the back, and the motorwell
is meant just to give room to swing the motor up and in. (Much like
Micro's, I believe.)

But I really like the idea of a motorwell in which you put the motor,
allowing a clean, more closed-in transom. There would be less sticking
out when I'll be trailering this monster boat, less vulnerability to
damage or theft, and just plain old esthetics.

Now I know I won't have room to stick the motor in this 13" or 14"
space and swing it up. But I might be able to put a motor (6 hp?) in
there and slide it vertically up and down. I'm imagining something
like a good slab of 2x10 to mount the motor on, with metal channels
on either side to guide it, and either a pulley or lever system to
hoist it up or drop it in.

Is this crazy? Anyone ever try anything similar?

Thanks for any advice.

All best,
Garth
