Re: [bolger] Re: Newby here with a few questions.

Don:

I agree with Jamie. I can't see a nickel's worth of difference between building with internal molds and external ones. The only to truly judge is to build one each way. After that, you should report back to this group.

Hi Don

I haven't built either boat, or anything using external moulds, but
I've built strip canoes. The external moulds might (should) help
fair the hull, as the outside of the strips will be smoother, with no
differences at the edge, than with internal strips. Of course, the
inside might need more work then, but it isn't so critical.

You'd also be building upright instead of upside down, and that might
help you in getting a nice sheerline.

Hey, Folks! Just joined the group, and was wondering if anyone out
there has tried to build either "Monhegan" or "Master Hand", the two
Friendship Sloops described in Phil's book, Small Boats. "Master
Hand" is described as to be built with strip planking over EXTERNAL
molds. This seems to complicate matters, as the "I should think"
theory would show that it could be built on internal molds with epoxy
glue and plastic tape over the faces of the molds, to allow the
release of the molds from the fully planked hull... Any thoughts on
this matter would be appreciated......
