[bolger] Re: Power for Martha Jane:J24
the J24 will sail in just about any amount of wind and carry itself to
windward very well. In areas where the motor is used in a narrow
channel or when you are out of air, the 2 will work. This is more of a
weight concern than a practical concern. Most J's use 4-5hp that are
removed for racing. Many of the boats in Buzzards Bay carry no motor
due to the width of the harbor approaches.

There was a discussion some days ago about the right amount of power for a
Martha Jane. Ten hp engines were discussed.
I was going to offer an opinion then, but was distracted, but I will do so now.
My boats and their power have been as follows:
Santana 21 - 21' - 2100lbs - 6hp
Rhodes Mariner - 19' -1300 lbs - 4hp
Capri 22 - 22' - 2250 lbs - 5 hp.
I have felt that all these boats had enough power. When I first had the
Capri, I used the 4hp from the Mariner for a season, and felt it was just
too small. I went shopping for a 6hp and bought the 5hp Mercury because the
dealer was giving a good price. It is completely adequate, and gives me
about 6kts.
If I was going to buy a new engine for a Martha Jane, I would shop for a
5-6hp engine, and save a fair piece of change over the price of a 10hp.
What is the voice of experience out there?
Peter.
p.s. Once I saw a heavy displacement sloop of about 20' loa with at 35hp
engine, and I often seen J24's using 2hp, so nothing surprises me.
