Re: Antifouling and Masking Tape
right -
I do watch out for gaps in the tape prior to touching a brush to it.
I use a flexible putty knife to lay it out smooth. The other masking
tape sounds like a good buy if you can find it!

I use the Kleen-Edge brand of masking tape. Masking tape, including
the 3M Blue, can leave a ragged edge since the paint can seep under
the slightly wrinkled edge. Kleen-Edge doesn't have the wrinkles. I
believe Wal-Mart carries it, but I know it's at HD and Lowe's. I've
also started using it for things like caulking. Leaves a very crisp
caulk line.

Good thought, but the price of copper has rocketed worldwide, since
the chinese construction boom. Wiring a house in copper now costs a
lot more I believe, then there is hot water piping...it goes on!
How goes the boat Bruce?

Hi David, thanks for your thoughts and advice. The tape which caused
the problem is probably the same blue shiney? stuff you use, and I
had no trouble before. But this roll, still in it's plastic sealed
package, must have suffered by being in the garage over summer. And
it seemed really sticky, I should not have kept on with it. Yes, I
always remove the tape straight away.

My anti-fouling is Interlux Micron Extra, which is semi-hard but
ablative, and suitable for shallow warm water, which is where Oink
will start out being moored.

My anti-fouling is Interlux Micron Extra, which is semi-hard but
ablative, and suitable for shallow warm water, which is where Oink
will start out being moored.

Good reply Peter! Yes, I admit removing is worse, far worse.
Thanks also for your unflaggingly optomistic comment too. Launching
in winter is no problem here, indeed, the weather is often more
settled than summer, and especially spring when it blows like crazy.
I'm getting annoyed with this obstruction to my garage......cars are
rusting in protest! And work has slackened off a little, so the push
is now on, ready or not! (I have a backup in that the anti-foul is
good for 12 months before immersion!) Nope, she must be launched
soon.
The gentle tape works very well, from Sellotape, but don't know the
particular description because the wrapper was chucked, but on
another trip to a shop, there seems to be lots of similar products.
It's a horrible mid-purple color, and I was expecting the neighbours
to complain! You will need lots for your gold on black filigree
decor for Windermere.

Congrats on getting to the fun part. Here is where patience and
attention to detail will really pay off (literally). It can mean
hundreds of dollars in resale value.
I use 3M Blue tape for painting jobs. Never, ever leave it on too
long as it becomes a mess to get off. When painting with alkyd, or
oil base paints, squirt a little Penetrol into the batch to make it
easier to apply. Sand with 180 grit in after you are sure its dry
(rub your hand over it, if it is dry your hand will glide). It
really makes a difference in the overall quality of the final job.
Yes, there are a couple of jobs worse that applying antifouling.
1. Taking off old antifouling paint because some poor sap applied
the cheap stuff over many many years. (I like either the hard epoxy
formulas for racing sloops, or the ablative stuff that I use now.)
2. Applying barrier coat epoxy over old tired gelcoat. This is a
minimum of 3 coats with sanding in between. This is actually an
essay entitled "How I Spent My Spring Vacation." I have become a
believer, wooden boats rule. What would that be in Latin? I think it
would be a good bumper sticker!

Antifouling, is there a worse task in the world than applying this
muck! I did the first 2 coats on Oink this weekend. One to go.
But a huge annoyance when I stuck on an old roll of masking tape to
mask the waterline. It seemed extra sticky, and after pulling it
off, it took patches of topside paint with it. I have never had this
trouble before, and the hull had been well sanded before the
topsides were painted, months ago.
Today at the shop I found special 'gentle' tape, at twice the cost
of normal, and had no trouble with the second coat. It was also much
easier to adjust when applying.
