cruising in a light schooner
I just got back from beaufort, nc where i was visiting the folks for
a few days. While i was down there i stopped by a marine hardware
store to pick up a couple of sheets of marine fir for the micro and
i got to talking to this young guy that works at the store. He asked
me what i was up to. I told him a micro navigator was in the works
and then confessed he was a bolger fan. When he was in high school
and totally broke he built a light schooner from luan and exterior
ply, added a cabin against bolger's wishes. Then sailed it from Bath
Maine to the florda keys with his girlfriend and dog on board!
That's what i call cruising on a budget! Goes to show it ain't got
to be fancy to do some traveling. The schooner is sitting in a state
of moderate disrepair in a shed in beaufort, i'm guessing about five
or more years after the cruise. The boat has started to delaminate a
little and looks a little rough but she still floats. The fellow is
now in the works of building a 28 foot chapelle sharpie for some
serious cruising.
