painting a sneakeasy

Thanks for your input. I will order the System Three primer and top
coat today. I don't need any paint adhesion or drying problems to
complicate the process. Dave S
One man's view of one way to get a good finish is on this site:
http://www.amateurboatbuilding.com/ProjectJustRight/index.htm
Look at the sections on interior and topsides.

Reuel Parker (in his book) and Jacques Mertens (on his web site) have
each recommended using a hi-build primer. Perhaps this is no longer
necessary if you have already gotten the epoxy to the 180 grit stage.

Peter
System Three discusses the problems of getting paints to bond. The paint
manufacturers seem to change their formulations daily. If you're not into
experimenting, I'd suggest you use their stuff.

My own experience is that on my dinghy, which was washed but not
sanded/roughened, the porch and deck enamel dried OK, but sloughed off
easily, at least for the first year. Lately it seems much tougher (or maybe
I don't look as close anymore).

If you are happy with your workmanship, ie: your
Sneakeasy is a "keeper", stick with the System 3
"system" all the way. Only you can decide if your
Sneakeasy is a keeper for you or not.

If you don't think you are going to keep it for more
than a year or two, use the Payson semi-gloss
water-based latex house paint method. Try to keep the
boat covered while its on the trailer, make sure the
cover has a vent in the top to stymie condensation and
subsequent dry rot.

I get to partially restore my Martha Jane this winter,
I can't decide whether I'll use laytex or epoxy. I'm
planning to put a 500 pound copper shoe on the bottom
to substitute for the flooding ballast that the
builder never completed. I want to see how well the
copper sloughs off marine growth. I think I'll be in
the Florida Keys when I do this, so it should be a
good test of copper plating in semi-tropical waters.

I'm finally ready to paint my sneakeasy. It has three coats of System
Three epoxy sanded to 180 grit. I don't know if I should use the
System Three primer and top coat or will something less expensive
work as well? Also can I use the same paint on the bottom? The boat
will only be used in fresh water and will live on its trailer. Thanks
in advance for any suggestions. /
