Re: Monongahela/Allegheny cruise
Hey Sam-
I work in the parks and recreation department at wvu and i found
some info on the upper Mon river trail.
The section runs from fairmount, wv to ten mile creek just north of
rice's landing in PA. About 65 river miles.
5 locks......grays landing(24/7 operation....724-583-8304), pt.
marion (24/7....724-725-5289), morgantown(24/7....304-292-1885),
Hilderbrand (8am-4pm...304-983-2300) and opekiska (8am-4pm.....304-
366-4224)
You can call in via cellphone in advance or raise the locks on VHF
13, if there is no traffic it takes about 20 minutes to get
through....bring your own lines to tie off your boat.
The little brochure makes it sound real good. It lists all the
marinas, public docks, boat ramps, restraunts, river milage,
historical points of interest and other crap.
I could mail you a copy or scan it to you in peices if you'd like.

Thanks, Jason. The Corps of Engineers sells charts
for both the Mon and the Allegheny that supposedly
have all the info on the locks--I have ordered a set
but the have not arrived. My understanding is that
all the locks on the Mon are "on demand" except for
the uppermost, which requires notice.
After rereading your original post i realized you

People fish the mon up here and eat thier catch......then again
maybe that's why W. Virginians can be on the odd side?
Seriously, the AMD (acid mine drainage) contamination is'nt too bad
until the cheat confluence. If the Cheat is as bad as some claim i'm
in trouble because i kayak there on a regular basis, usually
spending as much time upside down as right side up. From what i know
biologically speaking the Mon is not too bad, same goes for heavy
metals and PCBs......the watershed is huge so that's impressive. I'm
sure it get's worse downstream from pittsburg due to all the
smelting and iron production of the past.
The Mon is cleaner than it was 20 years ago, i would'nt let the
water quality shy me away from what could be an amazing trip. Take
some viniger and put a couple drops in your ears after swimming and
you should be fine and for heaven's sake keep your trap shut when
you are in the water :)

Will they open them for anyone, do you have to call/radio in advance
or is there a set schedule? The lock opperators must be increadibly
bored i see one barge a week out there......rumor has it the corps
want to automate the system up here.

Thanks, Jason. Is the river swimable at Morgantown
and above?

Anybody know which is
5th most threatened and funky waters in the country due to acid mine
drainage.......the mon is'nt real pretty but it goes from psuedo
wild to urban and back. Lots of neat barge wrecks along the shores.

5th most threatened and funky waters in the country due to acid mine
drainage.......the mon is'nt real pretty but it goes from psuedo
wild to urban and back. Lots of neat barge wrecks along the shores.

I'm upstream of pittsburg about 100 river miles via the Mon in
morgantown, WV. there is a system of operational locks from the
mines up stream of here all the way to Pittsburg and beyond. They
used to run coal from here down to the smelters in Pittsburg and the
coal burning power plants in the ohio valley. The mining is about
done up here but coal barges and party barges still ply the waters
from time to time. I would check the army corps of engineers for
info on the lock operation schedule and or procedures. Next spring
when my gig is up here in motown I was thinking about taking a month
and seeing how far i could make it down river.
Good luck to you! If you try it keep me posted to fuel my little
huck fin day dream.

I know there is at least one weir (low dam) on the Allegheny that you would
have to portage around. It is visible from the Penn. Turnpike. For more
information read the first part of William Least Heat Moon's "River Horse"
book.

I am hoping that I can cruise for a week in my Bolger
Topaz next month near Pittsburgh, Penna. Do any
members have any experience on the Mon., the Allegheny
or the upper Ohio? I am thinking of putting in near
the head of navigtion of either of the two tributaries
and running to Pittsbugh. Anybody know which is
prettier/cleaner/more interesting? Any help much
appreciated. Sam
