I have a rudder with an end plate on my boat which started out as a Long
Micro. One day I was running downwind in 20-25 knots of breeze with the bow
in green water, white froth to the top of the stem and the last metre of the
hull out of the water (log impeller in fresh air). I believe that the end
plate was the only thing preventing a broach or worse. The response was a
bit mushy but still easily controllable. Vessel has since been extensively
modified into a fine little boat (a new bow for a start) and cannot be
called a Long Micro. The origional rudder and end plate remain however.

I'just built a shallow rudder for the folding schooner with a
12"wide bottom board. This has been built under the guidance of the
master( thats why your designs arent finished) It is the ugliest
thing I've yet added to the schooner, but the ugly bit will be under
water. Has anybody had any experiences , good or bad, to relate
onthese rudders , which seem to be a Bolger secret weapon?
