Good to know, i'm planing a wishbone for my mizzen. I don't know
what is awkward about the curved arm type, but it should be easier
to build a square one. Anyone want to explain this to me? I've been
out on a bunch of windsurfers and a non-such the curves in those
wishbones did thier job (i.e. the sprit did'nt get in the way).....
Huh?

I came across this when reading about the Iceboat in BWAOM. Thought
it interesting.

"The sprit boom could be a wishbone if you are offended by the girt
(ridge) in the sail when the straight boom is on the lee side. I
wouldn't bother with it myself, but if used, should be the Sidney
Herreshoff-type with two straight arms joined by a straight strut
ahead of the mast, forming a triangle around the mast and sail. The
usual curved-arm wishbone is an awkward object at all times when the
sail is not set." Page 15

I also enjoyed his opening sentence in this article:

"When it comes to iceboats, I have the advantage of having had no
first-hand experience at all. A machine designed to generate wind-
chill factors down toward absolute zero is not my idea of a vehicle
for enjoying winter."

And I can't resist adding this one from the introduction:

"Even in the most obvious matters of speed and weatherliness, an
inferior option isn't usually bad enough to preclude use of an out-of-
the-way idea offering some convenience, or simply amusement. The
catagory of Entertainer includes boat designers along with classical
musicians and strippers."

Here! Here!

Some of his comments are priceless:-)
