You're putting a crossbar at the front of a pair of sprits. The two front
corners are supported by lifts. A long straight spar is, I suppose, easier
to stash somewhere. There's no mechanical reason a curved wishbone is
better and it's a lot harder to build.

Jason,

I'm just guessing, but I've always thought he was referring to a curved single-arm wishbone, which requires a topping lift and is a bit dicey in the best of conditions. In another boat article he rails agains this style, even though it is used there (maybe at the request of the owner).

The double curved ones are used in a lot of large catboats, and even in the F. Fenger style staysail ketches of mid-last century (and beautiful things *those* were... I used to drool over one named Anne Bonney that lay at New Orleans 25 years back). Of course, these large ones always have lifts, but I've never read of any trouble with those, although I can imagine they could be a menace if the sheet broke in a breeze of wind. And certainly you are right abt. their use in windsurfers where they are about necessary for their use as handles :-)
