Gypsy can actually handle quite rough conditions, though it requires great
vigilance on the part of the helmsman. She's super responsive and points
quite high for a dagger board boat. She's prone to yawing rather frightfully
on a run, but this might be correctable with the addition of a skeg. But
she's definitely a two or one person boat. June Bug will carry a heavier
load and sail much more safely (and quickly) on a run, but she pounds
mercilessly to windward and can't sail as close to the wind as Gypsy.
Despite her heavier load capacity (for rowing) she becomes a very sluggish
sailor with more than two adults aboard. But she IS a great family boat for
rowing and mid lake picnics and serving as a swimming platform. You can
actually dive from her safely from anywhere and then climb back in over the
side without flipping her, even if there's no one else on board to
counterbalance for you. Both are easy to build and take the same rig. Why
not do what I did and build one each ?;-) Good luck.
