Could someone please post a URL to see this boat "Oyster"?
Hi
For the "Alternateuser 2001" that inquired about the "Oyster" This is a great design, and by no means a small 24'r. She is by William Garden a designer residing at Toad's Landing, Victoria, B.C. Canada.

A good write-up and several of the plan pages can be found in the designers book "Yacht Designs II", starting on page 86. If you can't find the book new or used it should be available from Mystic Seaport Museum, 50 Greenmanville Ave, Ct 06355-0990. She a great boat and not too difficult to build.

Good Luck - Aloha - Jack Spoering, Ft Lauderdale, Fl

Oh, dear. I do seem to be getting careless. In this case, I probably
conflated Jesse Coopers with AS-29s. At any rate, I think there have
been at least three JCs: the original JC, Chuck's Tomboy, and the
Archibald's pre-Loose Moose boat. (The first two are different, are
they not? The third was in Europe.) I'm not doing anymore guessing,
no matter how much I think there are probably some more. Chuck's
website is worth two or three average websites, in any event.

...so you said that "several JCs have been built and there is a lot
of 'em to be seen on the web " ...Where do I look ?? To be
honest ,the only JC i've seen sofar is the one on the site of Chuck
Merrel .
I guess i have got to get a great deal of the books of mr.Bolger as
well ... Those books DO look good and interesting as well !

Thanks for the info !

P S ...funny ; the longer I stare at the JC, the more 'beautifull' I
think she becomes...;)
New copy of Yacht Design II for $24 at:

I think Bill Garden is de facto retired.

I also think the advice to consider Jesse Cooper as an alternate is
sound. Several JCs have been built, and their owners like them. Of
course, the owners have been pretty knowledgable, and had reasonable
expectations. Quite a lot has been written, and there are good
pictures on the web.

JC's volume is much bigger than the Chapelle design.

Dear mr.Vandervaart ...

* No need for an excuse ... every bit of info is more than happy anyway !!
Mr.Gardner's book (part i and ii) can't be found by Amazon nor by boll or some other little bookshops-too bad, but I'll just keep looking for it.Thanks for that tip.
Since I've followed all the leads and links the fantastic 'crew' of this board gave me I've come up with some 'conclusions- for now' ... ; the plans off mr.gardner's "oyster' seem to be quite hard to get your hands on-(some one even said that the author/boatbuilder would want you ,as prospect buyer/builder to be off his standard, as in ;you'd would have to be quite good before even buying the plans or asking some specific questions about "oyster" (?!) Which seems a bit odd to me because off the fact that Gardner 's also a businessman ... ) I don't know offcourse to what exctend this message is really "true" or not, but it does scare me off a bit cause I'm a layman in boatbuilding ...(not at woodcraft, but that s another story ) Furthermore I've read that the "scow sloop" designed by H.Chapelle can be compared with Gardner's "oyster" .I sure hope that's a right comparison otherwise the conclusion I'm about to make will be a bad one ...On Chuck Merrel's website a writing of mr.Bolger is
filed where he says that his "jessy cooper' he (re-?)designed for mr. Merrel (the "TomBoy"), is not only much 'roomier' -on the inside-while-smaller and more compact-on the outside ... but also seaworthy... Seeing some of bolger's designs I would say that his design 's probably also much easier to build and will lead to a much lower total-cost-prize tag ... (sorry for the bad-english...dutchies eh...sigh...) Off course I haven't yet read the books of mr.gardner- his designs could score much more points in the 'beauty-department'...be more thought-through (interior design ?) or perhaps check out to be much more 'traditional -as in:"a yacht as a yacht is supposed to look .." ?? I really don't know yet.

What I do know is that designs as ; the 'Super Brick'...(where can I find more info on that one ??) or the 'jessie cooper' mr.Bolger (re-?)designed for C.Merrel...or even a "big, long" Micro quite appealing ...!

Thanks for all the reactions and info people...it's much appreciated !!!

Sincere greetings,

M.Hulleman

Sorry. I may have begot confustion by being too lazy to go
downstairs and check. "Yacht Designs" and "Yacht Designs II" are
completely different books and cover completely different designs.
So, if Oyster is in YDII, then it is not in YD.

If someone were to nominate William Garden as the most successful
yacht designer of the 20th century, he could make a strong case. He
was successful in every phase of the business from rowing boats thru
mega-yachts, though he did not really go in for racing design in a
big way.

A couple of quites. From Bob Perry:"Ole Bill has some magic in his
pencil." From Joel White:" One of the best designers of structures
that look good in 3-D."

To compare him to Bolger (topicality!), Garden is more mainstream in
taste, more interested in beauty, more controlled his application of
ingenuity, and a much better businessman. There have been probaby 10
or 20 men who have worked for Garden, then gone out on their own and
made a name for themselves.

You know there is a prize/fund to be delivered upon the boats
launch....from post 32633....i think

The fund now sits at $937.00, as of 19, November, 2003. with the
addition of Steve Bosquettes 25 buckazoids.

This to the first builder of a recognizable Bolger Superbrick, built
from Bolger plans (as PB says, exercise your individuality above the
waterline only), that can sail (with or without motor assistance)
around a 1 mile triangular course.

Pledgers are:

Bruce Hector $100
Bruce Hallman $100
Craig O'Donnel $10
Peter Lenihan $14 (he posted 20 Cdn. which we all know is almost
worthless, but we'll take it anyways)
David Ryan raises to $100 (challenges all in group to pledge at least
$25 and then someone can build it at a profit!)
Duckworks Magazine $100 (some people will do ANYTHING for decent
Superbrick building article)
J. W. Kelley $25 (extra e added, sorry)
Jeff at cosailor pledges $25
Jim Pope added $25
Rav Davis, Georgia pledged $20
Scott Backen Volcano, CA added $20
Peter Page doubled to 40 Australian which my currency converter says
is about $24 US
John Kohnen add a sawbuck, er, $20 (of the famous mother of all
maritime links fame)
David Romasco $50 , of Antispray fame, ("n" dropped, oops)
Steve Paskey, Tacoma Pk, MD, $50
Bill Turnbull, $25
Justin Meddock, Durham, NC $25
Ken Locarnini $25
MArk A. $10
Pep Cruells, Barcelona, Spain, the big spender of the group pledges
100 Euros, which my converter pegs at $114 UD greenbacks!
Barry Johnson, $25
Steve Bosquette $25.00

Total: $937.00 US Dollars (over a grand Canadian for sure)

Oyster is also in "Yacht Designs II", I think the original
"Yacht Designs" is out of print. YDII has most
of the original book's content plus some super-mega yacht stuff.

Have you seen Super Brick?

Oyster is the design of the genius William Garden. It was featured in
one of his books entitled Yacht Designs.

Peter
Hi all ,

Since I've allready been here a couple a times now, asking all kinds
off things that were either a bit dumb and typical for the layman-
boat-afficionado, or they were typical "dutch" as in ;"Yes, we DO
want a boat, but we DON'T want to spend any money on it ... and also
some f r e e advice please " as a result I feel kinda guilty right now
because i have nothing to offer you guys in return, and yet another
question ... Does anyone know the origin of the pages I send to the
files-section of this site with the name "oyster" on it ... Either I
have found it on the Bolger site (one off 3...) or on one of the
linked pages (it was kinda late when I found it and my eyes as well
of my brain were allready kind off numb at the time see) The oyster
is supposed to be a very small sailingboat, but equiped as a fully
functional live-a-board little boat ... so, when the text talked
about it being able to float in even very shallow water I immediately
got enthusiastic - could this be what I'm looking for ??

'Hope someone recognizes the text, or the boat and knows something
about the builder or a way to get to know more about this
little "oyster" ...and AGAIN - if there's anything I could do in
return ...please let this cheap little dutch-guy know, allright ?? ;))
