Re: [bolger] Re: Epoxy filler
That sounds right. 1987 was the last time I visited that barbershop. He
did say that if you spent the big bucks, you could get the pure talcum
powder even then.
Roger (who wouldn't work for John Mansville, but thinks most of the
asbestos fear is generated by lawyers looking for class action lawsuit
winnings -- just don't sand the stuff!)

Talc is a natural mineral substance that is mined and ground fine.
Occasionally, asbestos is mined incidental to the talc in the natural
deposits, hence the connection. My information (as a certified
asbestos inspector) is that contamination can and does happen, but
its rarer now with increasing awareness. Much new 'talc' baby powder
is now corn starch-based, but read the labels. You can still buy the
older stuff. I've used it in epoxy as filler. Smells nice when you
sand it.

I say we should counsel those seeking advice on fillers to do an

absolutely manic-many-week-no-holds-barred blizzard of wood working
which saw my bowshed completed and all 16 panels of the two hull
sides of WINDERMERE completely assembled....that is;224 linear feet
of grinding and Payson Tape jointing of both the inside and outside
of the hull sides and 140 linear feet of cutting out the profile from
the assembled panels and not a single void to brag about :-) and,the
best part, flipping these two 8' X 32' panels over to tape the other

Well, I got it from my barber who had given up dusting his patrons after
shaving their necks. He made it sound plausible (overlapping deposits).

The asbestos:talc statement smells like an
urban myth. So many baby boomers, [and their
lawyers] had talc on their bottoms five decades
ago, I wonder where the class action lawsuits
are now? Can anybody cite some talc:asbestos
references, I am just curious, not flame trolling.
I remember seeing somewhere that sandstone was the source of
talc, and sometimes sandstone will have asbestos inclusions.

Watch that talc. The cheap stuff comes out of the same deposits where
asbestos is found. I still like/use asbestos, but don't breath the dust.
Another filler that leaves a very hard coat is lime, from your local garden
store. I used it on the (unfinished) chain locker. Hammers have no effect.
On rec.boats.building and here we discussed the use of silicon carbide on
keels. Instead of the ramp scarring your boat, your boat scars the
concrete.

To All:
Some fillers that we have used, other than the "store bought" stuff, has been the non-scented baby powder/talc and fiberglass batting. Both have worked well. The talc was used for the final coat over the tape and the batting used in place of a bondo type filler.
