person is current possession may well have paid for the punt from someone
who got it as a gift from someone who knew someone who stole it. It's a
risky business all around, and you may wish to take note of the statute of
limitations on the behavior, and keep a low profile until then.
I'm not saying you weren't right, I'm just saying it wasn't legal.
