[bolger] Re: Making Paint/Varnish Dry Faster?
Yes, been down that road. There's red paint all over the grips and
handle of my 12-20 spinning outfit cause I was too much in a hurry to
get my Gull in the water and go chase fish.
In this case I was just trying to find a way to put the second coat
of white on a little fast. Can says 24 hours hours, but it was so
warm/dry today that I got a second coat on in the late afternoon.
Wow, it sure looks nice; bright white tips finishing off that long
run of varnished wood.
Still have the gaffs and jib boom to go. If anyone's got a tip for
speeding up the dry time between coats, without risking getting
snotball finish, I'm open to suggestions.
She's going to look sooooo good on the 4th of July flying the big
First Navy Jack (candy striped Don't Treat On Me) flag that my wife
got me!

Hi David, Relax and go fishing. Even when the paint seems dry it
probably isn't. It may be touch dry in a day but not fully cured for a
week.

probably isn't. It may be touch dry in a day but not fully cured for a

Japan Drier does make the paint dry faster and it
gives a added hardness and gloss to the finish.
Remember that most quick dry enamels do not have the
quality of finish of standard enamel paint.
There are other chemicals that will do the same. Go to
a good commercial paint store and find the
knowledgeable person and they will help you. The
other way is to call the factory technical support
people of the brand of paint that you are using and
they will help.
Always use a good respirator with these chemicals they
are not good for lungs.
Remember temperature is important so many of these
products should not be used in the warm months if you
want a good finish. A trick we used in cold weather
was to pre-heat the object to be painted once it had
good surface temperature we shut down the heaters,
painted the object and turn the heaters back on.
Remember the old painters saying. "you can rush the
painters but not the paint"

You have inspired me to paint the top of my
Micro Navigator masts white too.
Great progress on the 'loose ends'
yesterday, and today I hope for more.
Fewer and fewer remaining tasks
before launch.

normal drying can't be achieved. At any rate, it's too late; the
paint is on the spars.
BTW. I just stepped the mainmast so I can use it as a reference for
replacing the step for the foremast. Even with the blotchiness of
only one coat of white, it looks mighty fine!

FBBB,
I've finished varnishing the masts and booms for the LSME, and am on
to adding the finishing touch of painting the ends white. It looks
quite nice, but waiting for the paint to dry is frustrating. Is there
some way to apply heat that can hasten this process? Or should I just
relax and go fishing?
