Re: varnish
I really like cetol. Not really varnish and can add a wierd hue to
some woods(the cetol light is less of a color changer), but it's
tuff, lasts and is easy to apply. It only works on bare wood as i
understand. I really like it and may do my whole navigator pilot
house with this stuff instead of epoxy encapsulation and varnish.
Unless you live somewhere with fierce sun, a scrub down and one thin
touch up coat per year is all the mantainence needed each year, If
you keep your bobcat's spars under wraps most of the year you may
not have to do anything for two years at a time.
If you epoxied your spars......larry at raka seems to think,
captains vanish seems to stick the best......wait three weeks for a
full epoxy cure before application.
I've used this stuff on a boat hook i made(no epoxy), turned out
great, no brush marks and dried crystal clear. Think i did 4
coats.....took 30 seconds to scuff and wipe down before the next
coat application.
I also used some minwax exterior spar urathane from LOWES on my
brick's, spars.....took alot of coats but turned out ok(not as nice
as the varnish by any means). However, many commercially made boats
in the south are putting urathane on the trim work.....looks real
nice, super shiney, durable and looks to be a half inch
thick.....who knows how many coats they use or who makes the stuff.

I can't say how well it wears, because I've only just finished
putting the fourth coat on my spars.
However, I can say that it's easy to apply. My spars were
exceptionally thirsty, so the first two coats hardly even made a
finish. By the third one I had a nice shine, so at that point I
figured why not add the fourth coat (can says two minimum, four best).
I set up the spars so I could make a quarter turn with each pass, and
then went another revolution to catch drips and runs. Didn't get all
of them, but I'm happy with the result. Don't get anxious about
putting on additional coats. Even if the surface seems hard, wet
varnish will reactivate it and you'll get snot balls. Sanded between
coats with 220 (if you get gum instead of dust when you sand, give it
more time to dry,) and I then put two coats of bright white Benjamin
Moore Urethane Reenforced Porch paint on the tips. (I can't recommend
this paint highly enough! I've used it over glass/epoxy. It gives a
nice glossy, and very durable finish. Just make sure you let is cure
long enough.)
All in all much easier than I expected. Looks super nice! We'll see
how it lasts.

David
