Re: Gypsy Sloop?

Was thinking of adding shrouds angled back a touch over 10 degrees to
help the mast with the forestay tension with out getting to much in
the way of the main-sail also figured on adding 1 sq foot to the
overall sail area to make my math a bit easier.. was thinking of a
club foot jib to make it "self-tacking" (might be a bad idea...but
I'm willing to play with it) I really will want to be able to single
hand it... but having the jib there would give a passanger something
to do if they were so inclined... but I am thinking that that is a
matter of setting up the controls and running rigging just so...

I think my number one question is regrading lee vs weather helm and
how I should proportion the main/jib sails and weither I should move
the mast/centerboard

The sprit boom main sail is only 59 SF.

It would be fun to try it and find out.

You would need an extra set of hands
to handle the extra sheet, and perhaps
handling the backstays.

Would the needle mast hold up to the tension
of the forestay without adding backstays,
I wonder.

I am just about ready to build a Gypsy. Has anyone ever heard of
someone rigging her as a sloop.. Or have any suggestions for doing so.
I know I need to watch weather/lee helm etc.
