Re: [bolger] Mon river locks/ cruise...notice
Wow--Thanks for the heads-up. You would think they
could at least have put that on the website.

Hey guys there was some talk about cruising the mon from upstream of
fairmont down to pittsburgh a few weeks ago. I mailed out some info
on the Mon river trail to a couple of folks.......it's wrong! So is
the us army corps of engineers website, because i checked before i
launched.
I went out to run a 25 mile stretch yesterday. I took my white water
raft...rigged with a row frame, leeboard, balance lug sail, lawn
unbrella, 2hp outboard and a cooler full o' beverages(it's an
absolutely rediculous rig....but it's great fun for booze cruising).
Anyways it was realitively scenic and enjoyable trip, but when i got
to the morgantown lock it was closed.....no longer 24/7 operation.
However, while i'm standing on the warf with a beer trying to figure
out what's next a coal barge rounded the bend a pulled up to the
lock. The captain had made an appointment to run the lock so the
lock master showed up and we all talked. Ended up throwing my boat
on the aft deck of the tug and riding through the lock on the barge.
Had so much fun i stayed on board for another 10 miles till the
captain backed down on the tug stopped the barge, cut the engines.
Then i kicked the raft back into the river and powered up back
upstream to my intended takeout. Good fun.
The point is the US army corps of engineers has cut it's hours of
operation at all of the locks in the upper ohio watershed.....so
call in advance of any voyages and make appointments......it's free
but a pain in the ass. There are always barges running the river and
they don't mind you rafting up with them to pass a lock. so you
could follow along with one.....they are pretty slow though.
