The shape of the hull and self righting ability don't have
much effect on each other. As long as the center
of gravity/mass has a decent lever arm over the
center of flotation it is going to try to right it's self.
A bulb keep made of lead has a great deal more effect
than water ballast that is only a foot or so below the
center of flotation when knocked down.
While it is true that it make no difference if the ballast is
water, lead or feathers it does make a difference that
the more dense them material the greater the lever
arm from the center of flotation can be made. A piece
of railroad iron for a keel has a lot more righting moment
than the same weight of water inside the hull.
