[bolger] Re: Gudgeon & Pintle for Nymph

Hi,

I just bought a nice set of stainless steel gudgeons
and pintles from Glenn-L marine for $24.00

I had good luck with eyebolts and brass rod on my Windsprint. The key is to
use the heaviest, longest eye screws you can find in the rudder, else they
will pull out. The whole set-up will cost you much, much less than $10.

I'm glad to hear Oregon is sunny again. I spent a dreary week out there a
couple weeks ago. It looks like I'm headed out there again on Monday. I love
Oregon, but can't say I'm all that thrilled with Albany...

I've made my own out of various things, the ones on Entropy are made from
galvanized gate hinges, the ones on the D4 are made from four angel brackets
and an all-thread.

Jim Michalak has an article on small boat rudders, and he discusses using
door hinges, and seat belts, if you can believe it.

The Race Lite ones that CSB sells are pretty reasonable.

Larry, for your needs, a down and dirty, quick and cheap, is to use
hooks and eyes directly connected together, or eyes on both rudder and
boat, and a shaft of all thread for a pivot.
Stan SG
I think that I used RaceLite fittings on mine, or Holt and Allen. They
were considerably less expensive than the Harken and Shaeffer ones. I
tried using bronze rod inserted through eyelets but found that the
system was not reliable enough as the eyelets pulled out of the rudder.
I like to think that I am smarter now, maybe not. Any chandler that
carries parts for Lasers should have access to Holt and Allen products.
bernie wolfard at Common Sense had a line on racelite fittings.

Greetings,
I have become motivated to finish what must be one of the oldest unfinished
Bolger Nymphs around. The hull has been glassed for about 6 years and
hauled from one end of the state to the other. (Excuses for not finishing
are on file in the office) I recently restarted and have the gunwales on,
the seat ready and should have the rowing version completed within a week.

I have the materials for the sailing rig but have hit a minor bump with the
gudgeons & pintles. Out of the West Marine catalog or our local marine
stores these suckers are EXPENSIVE (or maybe I'm too cheap and out of
touch).

In any case, I'm looking for suggestions, alternatives & experiences. This
would be for a freshwater, lightweight boat. I kind of like the looks of
the ones shown for the Light Schooner in "Build the New Instant Boats" --
they should be easy enough to make up and should be cheaper than the $40
that West Marine wants. Comments?
