Peter cast aspersions on Bruce's plonk. I say the stuff is fine as long
as you're not trying to drink the whole jug (about 5 gallons, as I
recall). I suggest everyone attend the Kingston messabout this year and
do some research. I had no problems with the stuff, and I tend to get
the same results from one drink that anyone else would with two or
three. But if you do go beyond three, don't blame me.
I'm not sure I would maintain that recommendation if the plonk turns out
to be:
Why don't you bottle the stuff with a little red food coloring as "Amine
Blush"?

Add some pine resin to the homemade wine (Plonk?) and you'll have Retsina. One story of how Retsina developed was that the Greek authorities way back when ?wanted to curb drunkeness, so a law was made that pine resin had to be added to wine to make it undrinkable. But the Greeks got used to the taste so it prevailed!! This is what someone told me, it may or may not be true?!

How about a modular, floatable, kit made, grape concentrate, sugar

square plywood modular wine keg sealed with pine resin and epoxy. Why
the gentle rocking and swaying will act to hasten aging and

Beauty and utility too, I suppose, are in the eye of the beholder.
Mundoo III is quite some distance from PCB's Tennessee, but to me
she looks more like the old-time express cruisers (whose style PCB
was trying to emulate) than does Tennessee.
With 8' of beam the hull departs considerably from what is supposed
to be the ideal 5:1 sharpie length/beam ratio; but then, so do
several of Bolger's sharpie designs.
Don't forget that PCB published the complete dimensioned plan in
Different Boats. I don't think he was too worried about royalties.
I'd say he would be surprised and pleased that so many people have at
last realized what he was trying to achieve with this design. (It was
not built by the person who commissioned the design). Duck Flats have
done quite a lot towards publicizing Tennessee, and Bolger boats in
general.
If I were to build Tennessee (I got as far as pricing material and
working out how I could fit it into my garage), I would make it even
simpler, by reducing the cabin to a cuddy and enlarging the cockpit.
And there is no bad beer!

I used to keep a few of these bladders of juice on board, for un-

cutting their juice with antifreeze and making a lot of people sick.

Mr. Tyson,
I have to agree with you about the beers - Aussie & USA. The
Budweiser's & Coors make your canoe analogy very apt. So do the
Foster's lager, et. al. I'm very glad to hear that you do have some
tastier alternatives there, as we do here. In Oregon, we are blessed
with a bountiful blossoming of microbreweries. If you can ever get
your hands on the products of Widmer, Portland Brewing, Deschutes
Brewing, Full Sail, Bridgeport, or Rogue Ales - you'll be glad of it.
Keep a particular eye out for Hair of the Dog Brewery. A delightfully
no-compormise, beer lovers line of beers. Strong enough to curl your
toes, and absolutely delicious.
We are building the Goat Island Skiff - by Australian designer,
Micheal Storer. It's an open, plywood, flattie skiff - designed for
oars, sail, or small outboard. Our boatbuilding sessions are
frequently fueled by one of the above. Lately, though, we've been
heeding the advise of Mr. Storer. When asked about flotation, he
suggested his personal solution. That is to buy the boxes containing
plastic bladders full of wine; empty; use bladders tucked into nooks &
crannies as flotation. Bloody brilliant! We have been following this
plan diligently, and I expect good results. We did get off to a bit of
a rocky start however. My boatbuilding buddy, who can be a bit of a
parsimonious pecksniff at times, bought the first box of wine. The
cheapest rotgut available at the local supermarket. We choked it down
over several weeks (experience has shown that a better product
disappears much more quickly). Finally, one boat-night we had almost
finished the loathsome sludge. My two sons - who are also part of the
boat crew) offered to finish off the dregs. I agreed. Just before
shutting down for the evening, I grabbed the box, ripped it open,
pulled out the wine-bladder, opened the valve and blew heartily in an
effort to inflate it. It went phblttttttt. My youngest son, in his
single-minded efforts to extract the most wine for he and his brother,
had decided to snip the bladder. All that rotgut gagged down - For
Nothing!!!!! I chased him around the shop, waving a busted bladder. I
offered him for sale cheap to friend Jerry. After I had calmed down,
and coaxed him out from under the desk in the office, I explained his
transgression to him in soothing, lovingly parental tones. After I
coaxed him out from under the desk again, I offered Jerry money to
take him off my hands. No go. I swear that boy is gonna turn into a
lush - must take more after his mother after all (harummphh).
Ah well, it may not have been an auspicious start, but we have done
ourselves proud since. I have taken over the wine procurement duties,
son Devin is still alive, and the boat proceeds apace.

Okay Robert OK,never noticed it before, and I was poking fun at
Aussies! I do wonder If you gentlemen would takethis discussion to
the next level. I wonder if my dear Cousin Hugo could visit or has
seen, live and up close, a Mundoo III? I would use this design on
rivers and bays. It seems to me that if The beam is now 8' and the
Height is only 6.5' that (given a lite roof) would still be quite
stable. It also appears that there is a shoe on the bottom. I can see
where Some folks might not like the Cabin Look But I,for one, boat
most of the year and like the way it looks for protection from the
elements. I would probly give it a lobster house and use a bimini
with drop down sides for the back.
Talk to Me.

Yes , I have to admit that I was talking about Fosters which some
Ausie friend told me was invented to compete with the american such
beer mkt (Bud, Miller, Coors). I will mark your recomendations for
experimentation when I begin my winter hop & Barley testing program
(an annual event). I like Mackesson, Murphy & Guiness.

As one who has sampled the ale all over the place, you will usually
find that a bad Oz beer rates with a bad one frommost other places.
tassie = very good as a rule. rather liked the Moosehead too.
At least Duckflat is trying to get people to build Boats. If you
live 1000km from your epoxy supplieryou come to appreciate the
service they give in this country. Ive never bought anything from
themas their prices were off my realistic scale.
tried fosters once , that was enough.

Well, you rubbished all the aussie icons!
Now, the 'unknown' Cascade with the tiger I grant you is a fine beer.
I have to confess grandparent links to Coopers, but I have never
tried it.

maybe right, these are vile, poisonous brews that aren't very
enjoyable when you're drunk. Try a Tasmanian Boags or Cascade
premium lager which has a very European flavour. Or a traditionally

In reply to Don's comments about people not liking Australians and hating the Duck Flat Boatworks in particular, this is not true.
I'm Australain, if issues like nationality are important!?. As to hating the Duck Flats Boatworks, personally I don't, they actively encourage people to use Wooden boats and promote many sensible designs with a far greater appeal than all the mass produced plastic or aluminium boats the majority of people buy.
I just don't like the "Mundoo", her styling is appalling and her price very discouraging.
As to Duck Flats financially ripping-off Bolger, I don't think this is the case. Just that the design of Mundoo I/II/III is heavily based on Bolger's Tennesee Power Sharpie but its so called development has degraded the original purpose of the Tennesee design, a simple, cheap and economical, easy to build boat that just about anybody could build in their backyard with minimal skills.
Trying to "Up-market" this simple design could / will end in dissapointment. It would be better to opt for a design specifically developed for a certain purpose(that suits your needs) than try to adapt one design to fufill expectations that it wasn't designed for!
Peter Lenihan's "Windemere" or the "Topaz" designs seem to me to be far better options for relatively simple, economical power cruisers for sheltered and semi-sheltered waterways than a MunDON'T.
Hugo Tyson, Launceston, Tasmania.
Hugo Tyson <hhetyson@...> wrote:
Mundoo I/II/III are bastardizations of Bolger's original Tennesee Power Sharpie Concept and look totally overloaded with extraneous cabin and deckhouse type shelter. I"m not sure if they'd be any good in anything but reasonably sheltered waters with all that extra windage and top weight added by the revoltingly styled cabin. The Duck Flat Boatworks in Australia will build you one for $150,000.00c Aud (about $105000.00c US). You would have to be out of your mind to spend this much money on a simple power sharpie that you could build fully complete and fitted out for under $20,000 Aud.($14000.ooc US). Bolger's original Tennesee looks much better due to her simplicity.

What, is the Australian beer too strong for you? I've heard that American Beer is like making love in a canoe,........ing close to water. If your idea of Australian Beer is Foster's Lager or Victorian Bitter ,Tooheys XXXX or even Carlton Premium Lager, you maybe right, these are vile, poisonous brews that aren't very enjoyable when you're drunk. Try a Tasmanian Boags or Cascade premium lager which has a very European flavour. Or a traditionally brewed Cooper's Real Ale from South Australia, bottle fermented.

The first Mundoos were certainly a copy of T. They have said so.
Except they put a high sided cabin top on it, something I doubt
Bolger would ever have approved of for stability reasons. Luckily I
think most of them are used on flat rivers in inland Aus, but heaven
help any innocent who pokes his nose out into exposed waters.
I doubt Bolger gets royalties. Look in the links item and others on
this messages menu...you will find stuff about Bolger rip-off
merchants somewhere there.
It is true that the newer Mundoo designs are getting wider and even
have flared sides, and as they become more 'normal', they are
getting away from the original T design, which is a dead simple,
cheap, light, trailerable low power cruiser. So it is up to
you.....the basic approach (T), or if you want more in every
respect, including cost and bulk, head towards Mundoo.
Yes, their beer does suck!

Yes Rob, I said all that too, about them being valuable in promoting wooden boats in Australia etc...Maybe you should read my comments more carefully. Surely people are allowed to express their personal preferences, if everyone liked all the same things, the world would be a very dull place.

Duck Flat Wooden Boats are an invaluable resourse to wooden boats in South Australia and to stay alive also operate as a comercial enterprise so please be carefull how they are portrayed.

Very good Don :-)
I don't hate Aussies, I married one! I don't even hate Duckworks.

Hugo,
I would point out that the $150,000 Mundoo was a professionally built to survey fully fitted river cruiser and not a "Bolger's original Tennesee looks much better due to her simplicity" which I agree is better for the amaturer builder and if I were looking at river cruisers that where I would go so lets compare apples with apples please. Duck Flat Wooden Boats are an invaluable resourse to wooden boats in South Australia and to stay alive also operate as a comercial enterprise so please be carefull how they are portrayed. I have no commercial interest in DFWB except to say that we need them alive and well.

Don,
I don't think anyone has claimed they 'hate' Duckflats, though some
have expressed annoyance at the blatant rip-off of the original Mundoo.
If you look at their website you'll see the first one is very obviously
a higher version of Tennessee. Several people have criticised the sense
of this as it changes the stability for the worse -- which may well be
why they then increased the beam on Mundoo 3. I guess at that point it
isn't a ripped-off Tennessee anymore.
They have built several different designs of Bolger's, and I seem to
recall mention at one point that they had also sold plans of his boats
without his consent and at higher prices . Only they and Bolger would
know whether they paid royalties on the plans or the boats they built.
There's a bit more info on Tim Fatchen's Light Schooner and/or
Squareboats websites (sorry, I've lost the URL, you'll' find it easily
enough by searching though.)
I take it this - You shouldn't hate Ausies just cause their beer sucks -
was humour. It must have been, after all you wouldn't have tasted a beer
yet to enable you to compare, being from the US and all..... Wasn't that
one of your constitutional amendments - no alcohol? Elliot Ness etc
running around stopping real beer being imported, in case it cause the
populace to demand the real thing. (and don't quote "Foster's " back at
me, we make that for everyone else to drink so we can have more of the
real stuff for ourselves: like Cascade Pale Ale).
;)

Peter Lenihan's "Windemere" or the "Topaz" designs seem to me to be far better options for relatively simple, economical power cruisers for sheltered and semi-sheltered waterways than a MunDON'T.

I have heard the rip-off accusation before (from My dear cousin Hugo)
but I have not heard why its such a rip-off. Is it because of its
Beaminess or have they ripped
bolger off on Royalties? I don't mind asking
Bolger about it but I certainly don't want to stomp on his creativity
or ignore the advice of one of my assets and regular contributors to
this group (that be you). Why do people hate Mundoo and Duckflats so
much so much? There has to be Structural reasons or engineering
reasons. You shouldn't hate Ausies just cause their beer sucks.
Help me out here with your reasoning.
Best regards,
Don Tyson

Howard,
I guess I should have mentioned that I wrote to
Duckflats to see if they offer plans and they replyed "soon". As I've
not heard from them again I got to wondering if Bolger has a set of
boat plans for the same type of boat which that I could purchase from
him.
trouble is I have lost Bolgers contact info.
The Mundoo III is quite different from the
tennessee which it supposedley originated from.
For one thing it has an 8' beam, parting from the strict 6-1
length/beam ratio. It also appears to have standing headroom in the
main salon area.
Any additional input would be helpful and thanks for your reply.

Mundoo1 and Mundoo2 are Australian rip-offs of Bolgers Tennessee. I
