Don--Single handed capsize recovery is not likely to be a concern with Windemere, but dumping a small boat under sail is always a possibility. If the C/B falls down the slot or a leeboard is on the wrong side, an external keel or chine is extremely useful for righting the boat. I hate the look of Bolger external chine logs.
But since I liberated my stolen Elegant Punt, I love them! Bloody
Bolger is ahead every time.
In my very limited, allocated garage space, I have been able to
reach about, grip and twirl the punt around and about, like a robot
on a car assembly line.
This compares with my own smooth dinghy, which is like trying to
flip a greased pig....no external chine logs.
Peter, I'm uncertain as to whether Windermere has external chine
logs, but they could be the answer to your flipping problems!
All you need is arm extensions.

Thanks for the illumination Peter. Now if you want to have a
memorable turn over or turn up party, get in some kegs of Aussie
FOSTERS, and stand back!
As to Oink, my outboard is getting serviced; my punt is fully
renovated; my mooring contractor is trawling for my mooring weights
which he stored 'safely' somewhere in the briney until I needed it
(I guess he forgot in the nearly 2 years).
Sailing/launching photos are not being held back for want of trying.
Wife gets back from Asia on thursday...I dearly wanted to have an
empty driveway when she got back.
I love your Inuit longhouse.
Soon,
DonB

Hi Don,
Nope,no external chine logs on Windermere(and thank God too
since they are UGLY and a pain in the buttinski).
I much prefer a nice slick radiused outside corner for
fiberglassing like the pro's and leaving the chine logs
inside, protected from everything and doing their job :-)
And never forget,I never had "flipping problems" but
rather,"flipping parties"(YIPPEE!) with lots of cool liquid hop
juice, gloriously bright sunshine and a merry band of
pirates, thieves, drunks and bums, aka The Verchere Gang to make the
whole thing come off without a hitch.I've been one lucky S.O.B. to
date with my mini-boat-building-bees......sorta like a barn raising
of old except it is a boat, and it is done in brief spurts, over
time,as I get to that required stage,as apposed to all built in one
day :-)
I suspect that more then just me arms are going "to need
extensions" if I'm goin' ta screw myself flipping anything as big a
Windermere on my own :-D......
But yes, they do make awefully good sense in small dinghies
intended for worry free landings, beachings, groundings and other
rubbings,various :-)

Now,hurry on up with some flammin' sailing photos of Oink
makin' bacon out on the briny blue :-D

Sincerely,

Peter"look Ma!No extensions on me!" Lenihan, from along the dark and

DonB,

I don't think you "grasp" the problem.

HeeHeeHee.

But if Windemere were a punt, you'd be right.

Don Schultz
I hate the look of Bolger external chine logs.
But since I liberated my stolen Elegant Punt, I love them! Bloody
Bolger is ahead every time.
In my very limited, allocated garage space, I have been able to
reach about, grip and twirl the punt around and about, like a robot
on a car assembly line.
This compares with my own smooth dinghy, which is like trying to
flip a greased pig....no external chine logs.
Peter, I'm uncertain as to whether Windermere has external chine
logs, but they could be the answer to your flipping problems!
All you need is arm extensions.
