Re: [bolger] Re: Harbinger Questions for Hugo Tyson

Smooth hulls do look good, but many people on seeing Dad's Harbinger catboat "Dolly T" ask 'is the hull fibreglass?' whereby he has to tell them and explain that its wood. Some can't believe it as the finish is so smooth and fair. A clinker built hull on the other hand immediately in most people's mind can only be made out of wood, even though thats not entirely true as we all know!

Hugo, the clinker ply construction on Spartina is probably the way
that I will go. As I mentioned, I'm playing around with the idea of
strip planking only and primarily because I saw a pic of a cold
molded Spartina and liked the looks of the smooth hull. I like the
smooth lines of the "Dolly T" as well. When it comes down to it, I'm
not one to stray too far from the plans, though since I am in the
fiddling rather than building stage at the moment, it is rather
interesting to play around with possibilities.

Dennis,

I have no idea about formulas to caculate weight ratios of glassed wood composite hulls. Sorry I can be no help there.

Why not the clinker ply for the spartina? Very stiff and strong for weight, you could Fibreglass/dynel sheathe the bottom and first plank for more durability without added much extra weight. Clinker ply construction generally requires few if any ribs, just a few bulkheads etc.

Hugo, Thanks for the reply. I ask those questions about strip
planking because I am playing around with the idea of strip planking
Spartina. This design requires 1/2" clinker ply topsides and the
finished hull weighs in around 500lbs. I understand that strip plank
construction can make a boat lighter by as much as 25%, but in this
case I am not interested in a lighter boat--nor would Bolger. Are
you -- or anyone else here -- aware of any formulas that help
determine weights of wood/glass composite that would enable me to get
an idea of the feasibility of going this route?

Hugo, Thanks for the reply. I ask those questions about strip
planking because I am playing around with the idea of strip planking
Spartina. This design requires 1/2" clinker ply topsides and the
finished hull weighs in around 500lbs. I understand that strip plank
construction can make a boat lighter by as much as 25%, but in this
case I am not interested in a lighter boat--nor would Bolger. Are
you -- or anyone else here -- aware of any formulas that help
determine weights of wood/glass composite that would enable me to get
an idea of the feasibility of going this route?

Dennis

carvel planking for a perfect seamless fit and edge nailed with
silicon bronze anchorfast nails as well as epoxy glue. My father has
never used the tongue and groove method of strip planking, though it
would work perfectly well on a hull like a "Harbinger" catboat. Hulls
with extreme shapes such as plunb stens, lots of flare and hard
bilges require steaming of the planks, even with the strip-planked
method.

a strip planked, dynel sheathed hull of this size. The number of ribs
was reduced by about 1/4 - 1/3 I think, by respacing their centres.
They were put in mainly for looks, to keep up the traditional
appearance.

Dennis,

My father actually built the "Dolly T" and as far as I can remember the dimensions of the planking and frames etc. would be exactly the same or so close to the ones specified by Bolger in the plans for "Harbinger" in the "Folding Schooner ..." Book by Bolger.

The strip planking was 13mm x 20mm Celery Top pine,(very good "hard" softwood.light but far stronger than cedar) so after fairing it would be 1/2" Thick.
She is fully sheathed on the deck and hull with dynel cloth set in epoxy resin as well as the hull being impregnated with epoxy before painting on the inside.Note that each plank was fitted as in carvel planking for a perfect seamless fit and edge nailed with silicon bronze anchorfast nails as well as epoxy glue. My father has never used the tongue and groove method of strip planking, though it would work perfectly well on a hull like a "Harbinger" catboat. Hulls with extreme shapes such as plunb stens, lots of flare and hard bilges require steaming of the planks, even with the strip-planked method.

The weight(Not really sure, maybe 800lbs fully fitted out, but I'm only guessing) should be about the same as the original. The ribs are laminated and while providing extra strength are not really needed in a strip planked, dynel sheathed hull of this size. The number of ribs was reduced by about 1/4 - 1/3 I think, by respacing their centres. They were put in mainly for looks, to keep up the traditional appearance.
She may weigh fractionally more than the original, but no more than 30lbs or so, and due to the dynel/epoxy sheathed hull, she won't gain weight with age as a carvel boat will by soaking up some water.
Anyhow Bolger says that up to 500 lbs of ballast can be added, but this will make for a slower boat, albeit a bit more stable. and a "sinker" if swamped.

We'll be putting her on the trailer this coming weekend with a bit of luck, so weather depending ( It is winter here after all and we've been having an awful lot of rain this year ) we might get to raise the sail, so hopefully I'll be able to post some more photos of her next week, most likely the new photos will have to go into the Bolger4 Photos group in the files section.
