Re: Strip planking books?

So far I own and have read all books mentioned so far. Some really
good titles. If you want the latest Gougeon info on strip get the
free copy of their mag, Epoxyworks, that was set aside for this
topic, number 8 or 10, they will know. It's mostly canoe related,
but has some articles of tests done, and anyway, you can build most
boats up to 30 feet with 1/2 strips which isn't that far off. You
will find some forty footers done with 3/8".

Look at the Harryproa site and examine the earliest photo build on
it. I wouldn't do everything they do, but it's some pretty cool low
tech input high tech output stuff. Later they go nuts like everyone
with a decent budget.

The Duracore book, if you can find it shows how to set up to do large
duracore boats, which is a strip process. I wouldn't probably build
a duracore boat, even though it's proven, but the methods are pretty
state of the art for the time written.

I would stay away from all canoe books in that they tend to go off in
harmful direction for anyone with it in mind to do a job of any
size. They tend to rate material on their beauty and ease of use vs
speed, structure, and so forth. It's a worthwhile perspective as
long as one doesn't fall into the view that every 50 odd square feet
should take a year to complete. For a pro the glassed shell of a
canoe is a two day job.

The actual strip planking of a large boat is easy. What one needs to
know is how to manage a large boat project, and how to fair quickly.
The latter really isn't written about much.
I recommend a book by John Guzzwell called Modern Wood Yacht
Construction. It goes into the method strictly and at great length.
They show many design by top designers although no Bolger designs. I
found the book at a local book store and they wanted $$$$ but I
talked them down to $25.00 for it. The book also explains what types
of wood work and what types do not work with a couple of chapters
dedicated to wood alone. After reading the book you will become an
expert and your learning curve will go way down.

The book has many pictures and illustrations to appease the eyes so
invest the money and you will be completely pleased. I have
Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding and the Gougeon book but they do not
go into the detail that John Guzzwell does in his book. If you live
in a larger city you'll probably find it in the library.

"The Gougeon Brothers on Boatbuilding" is a great book and does have a ten
page chapter which covers strip planking, but stresses the strip plus veneer
style. They're a little squeamish about recommending scantlings for larger
craft.

Justin,
Selway-Fisher sells a booklet on strip planking. It is quite good and
worth a look especially since he does deal with designs larger than
canoes. Gartside recommends "A Strippers Guide to Canoe Building" or
some such title, but I admit that I don't have that one so can't speak
to its relevance.

Have you read Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding?
His chapter on planking might be a good read
and pages 124, 125 touches on his take on
strip planking big boats.

I want to learn more about strip planking for larger designs
(bigger than canoe/kayak with very thin strips). Can anyone suggest a
book or website? Are the canoe books applicable, just use thicker
planking? Or?...

Does the Meade Gougeon boatbuilding book cover this well, I was getting
ready to order that one.
