Re: [bolger] Re: Diablo
Thanks, Howard and Bruce--whether Diablo is designed
for long or short shaft, as long as it can be cut down
to 15" without putting the transom under I am OK.
There is a guy fishes one locally (Delaware Bay) and
she sure is a pretty boat--you can tell her from her
sheer a mile away.

I shoulda' read the previous reply before typing my mouth off. Now
I'm not so sure. I might have been confusing "Diabla" with another
project. I'll have to check the plans and measure my lavicious (can
you say "lavicious" on this group?) "Diabla's" shapely transom again.

Hi Sam,
Diablo, as drawn, is for a long shaft. I had a short, so just
lowered the transom 5 inches.
Mine planes and goes well with a 9.9, so I imagine an 18 would make
her fly.

Sam,
I've looked at the plan, as shown in the Payson book. It shows the
actual dimensions of the transom, with the cutout for the outboard 18
3/8" above the bottom.
I haven't done the trigonometry, but this would translate to approx.
15" perpendicular height above the line of the bottom, once the
thickness of the bottom ply (1/2") is taken into account. So it's
meant for a 15" o/b as drawn.
The cutout is 6 1/2" below the transom at the side, so you could
easily use a 20" motor just by not making the cutout.
In my most recent boat (not a Diablo) I was very careful to make sure
that there was the correct 20" vertical distance, but I really think
it could be jacked up an inch or so without leading to cavitation.
Payson says a 20 hp o/b will propel Diablo at 30 mph, with two people
aboard. He goes on: ".... adding more crew slowed her down very
little. She can handle 25 hp with ease, and at the same time, she
remains handily responsive with considerably less".
So 18 h.p. should be plenty unless you are going to really load her
up.

Sorry Bruce,
This is what it says athttp://www.common-sense-boats.com/......
Common Sense Boats
260 S Island Hwy #41
Campbell River, BC
V9W 1A4
Phone (250)286-6647
That's in Canada right?
Maybe it is just so the people that don't ever receive plans will look
in the wrong country.
I go to the site every now and them to look at Fishcat and Oldshoe.
Wouldn't buy from them though. I have a few sets of second-hand CSB plans,
very poor quality, apart from the rip-off issue.
