Re: [bolger] Zephyr?
dennis,
I have built a zephyr, and have added a kickup leeboard and rudder.
works well, but you should definitely build some lead into your
rudder. A line or bungee to hold it down works in a way, but is too
much trouble.
zephyr is fairly tender but sails o.k. as long as the water is not to
rough. the combination of little wind and some chop takes the fun out
of it, as it does in any flat bottomed boat.
I am sailing mostly solo, and feel that sail area is quite generous,
so I added a reef which I use as soon as the wind gets over f2.
reefing a boat this narrow in a chop takes some getting used to, but
can be done safely if you don't rush it. try not to drop the boom
overboard!
and, yes, a pretty boat she is, I love bolgers black/white color
scheme!
have fun!

I think a gaff rig with a jib would look great on this boat. I have
my nephew putting in the design into AutoCAD so we can see how much
ballast we need in a keel to stay right side up. I think a low gaff
rig like a pelican that has a long sail boom and gaff but lower than
most will work. Of course a couple hundred pounds in the keel won't
hut either.
The boat lines just scream "GAFF RIG" so I have the plans and a s
soon as my shop is completed I will start this project with a couple
others that I am doing a series on. I will post a few drawing before
I build it.

Dennis, one of my fondest sailing memories was a sparkling 12-15knot
breeze with a friend in his Zephyr. It went very well in a lght chop
in those conditions, two us us being able to hold up quite well in
the gusts. She is very forgiving with her flared sides and relatively
low rig. I remember all the favourable comments about the pretty
sharpie from sailors on much more important boats as we went past.
She looked great in deep green topsides and red bottom. Not that we
saw the bottom! She was built to standard plan.
I imagine Zephyr being a bit under-canvassed in light or flukey
conditions. A slightly bigger, easily reefed rig may be worth looking
at, though I wouldn't overdo it.

I live less than a mile from the Grand River. There is a park with

envision a Zephyr increasing the aesthetic value of the park's water
front property and its clientele's enjoyment. To all you Zephyr
sailors out there, can you give me an evaluation of her sailing
characteristics? Have you added kick-up leeboard/rudder to the
