Re: "Brick" Nose Dive

I have seen minor nose diving, but not to that extent. OTOH, I don't
generally sail alone, and I'm a big guy, so if I just move to the back,
it's ok. Also, I think your sail is larger than normal. Isn't the
regular sail 59 square feet?

I've found that fore and aft trim on Brick is critical, or you can end
up in irons when trying to tack.

Hi Dave,

I had it happen with my Brick with the original 59 sq. ft. sail when
I had the mast stepped on the starboard front corner as designed. I
had a lot of trouble keeping the boat on it's feet in gusty
conditions. I would sit on the port stern to counterbalance, but
that would twist the boat so much the gunwale would split. On the
starboard tack I didn't have as much trouble with it.

I finally moved the mast to the center and that helped a lot.

I have never planed with a sail but the five horse Briggs & Stratton
planes it nicely! It has to be just right but it will get up and
move out smartly, with only one person. I am about 260 lbs. So if
a few teens got the boat they would have a good chance also.

I want my sail to be about 80 Sq Ft but I have extra reinforcements
in the hull. I will make sure that I sit further back so I don't
pitch pole my brick!

Hi Dave

Sounds like a fun outing!
Yup, the force of the wind when running downwind will act to depress the bow
of a small boat. It's worthwhile sitting with your weight further than usual
towards the stern when running. The stayless sprit boom rig will allow you
to let the sail go forward of dead abeam assuming your sheet is long enough,
and that will help depower the boat in a gust. .
Brick was drawn [IIRC] with the 59 square foot 'instant boats' sail, so you
would be 25% 'overcanvassed'. I suspect the extra push from the sail won't
plane a Brick [has anyone seen Brick planing?] so in windy weather that big
sail's force is going to work against you - Reef :)

cheers

Greetings All,
I was out Sailing the Brick this afternoon, the Wind was blowing
pretty good, Anyway I was Sailing downwind not really moving very
fast and the Bow went under water! I let the sheet go and it came
back up. I guess I saw it coming because the Bow seemed a little low
then a gust Hit and down She went!Phew! Don't care to repeat that
again. I have a 74 Sq Ft Leg-O-Mutton Sail that I just put together.
[I believe that is what was on the original Brick} I have only been
Sailing for about two months and I learn something every time I go
out. I have about 60 hours in the Boat so far. Has anyone else had
this happen? Or is it just My total lack of experience?

Thank You,
Dave Blow
