OSTAR Sharpie
The current issue of Classic Boats has a nice little article about
the route taken by the "Cockleshell Heroes" during the WWII kayak
raid on French based shipping. The article retraces some of the
steps taken, and refreshes some info on Blondie Hasler, who survived
the raid, and later went on to single handing an junk rig fame.
There is an excellent picture of one of his ealier boats, Sumner,
which is a sharpie like thing, but with more the bow overhang of a
racing yacht like an early 12 meter. Notably, the boat has a blunt
bow like Micro or an advanced sharpie. It could be a Bolger boat if
one didn't know better. It was sloop rigged, abd later junk rigged.
It was raced in the RB&I race in '66.
Just struck me as an interesting boat in light of recent discusions
of some of Bolger's OSTAR designs. Sumner is apparently still out
there, as an exibit at a museum. For quite some time it was cruised
by a French yachtsman and did some daring euro passages, She was @
45'x 6.76', and is healing heavily in the CB photo.
