I guess having kids in the car most of the time - makes me a more cautious
man. But it was the aluminium which kicked the price up. Well worth it in the
long run. Steve

Hi Steve Anderson,
I have tandem axle now for my MJ but it seems a bit much. I had a blowout
coming home from Colorado to Virginia and never knew it. So the flat
promptly shredded. It seems yr safety margin can get expensive.

I obviously just bought a trailer too. I don't know the weight of Landroval
- but the trailer has a 5000 lb. capacity. Because we are surrounded by salt
water and even the air is caustic - I spent the extra for aluminum. I was
going to buy a single axle trailer but a dinner conversation with an exec
from the boston whaler company changed my mind. One of their boats ( 5000
lbs) was being towed home from a boat show - on a dual axle trailer - It was
being pulled at 70 mph and lost a wheel which went careening down the lane.
Because of the dual axles the rig was so steady that the driver didn't even
know he'd lost a tire and had to be pulled over by another driver 25 miles
farther down the road. The extra axle cost me $300 more - but I decided it
was worth it, expecially with a high windage boat like the martha jane. I
wanted to go with surge brakes also - but the dealership told me not to -
they said that even with the flushing systems that are now on them - the salt
water quickly ruins the brakes anyway. I don't know if that's true or not -
but figured that since the man was talking me out of a bigger sale I might as
well listen to him. I don't have mountains or hills to deal with however.

to a new trailer in 1995. Total weight with most of the built-in and
added-for- cruising-convenience gear ranged from 3000 to 3200 pounds on
the local gravel pit truck scales. That included 8 hp Honda, anchors,
etc. but no water ballast.
The trailer is a single axle Load Rite rated for 3700 LBS. G.V.W.R. and
a nominal shipping weight of 700 LBS. It has surge brakes and handles
the load very well pulled by Jimmy or Blazer with 4.3 liter V-6, auto
trans, and 4WD for ramps! Zephyr thus weighs somewhere between 2000 to
2500 LBS. depending on actual 'cargo' and accuracy of weighing. I add
that because the procedure involves weighing the whole package boat,
trailer and tow vehicle followed by unhitching somewhere out of the
trucking area and going back to weigh the tow vehicle separately and
subtracting. Hard to find a time when they are not too busy to allow
unhitching on the scales. She is not a lightweight, but she handles it
well. I think my trailer capacity is right for good over the road
hauling at normal highway speeds.

In the recent Martha Jane discussion I did not hear anyone give a
trailer weight or displacement for the Martha Jane. The design gives
1700#. I believe this is light for my boat, but I have not weighed it.
Has anybody weighed his boat? Apart from ballasting issues, I want to
