From present and past owners of the Hawkeye I would like to have the pros
and cons of this boat. I'm thinking of building one for my wife and I to
cruise rivers and canals with some port to port trips on the Great Lakes,
weather permiting.
I'm also thinking about using a 9.9 HP Yamaha to get more miles per gallon
of fuel. MPG is more important to me than speed. Any idea how many miles
per gallon I should get with this outboard motor?
If boat is built to plans what is the hull thickness?
Any chance of my emailing present or past owners of the Hawkeye off line
to talk about this boat?
Thanks much for your help.

Waldo,
As usual, Peter is correct. Just sign up for membership in ALL the
Bolger groups (10 or so at last count) and your problems will go away.
Yahoo seems to think that if you go to a link in which you are not a
member, you have signed out of this forum. I usually do a "right
click" and open the photo link in a new tab (Firefox and IE7) to avoid
the chance of getting signed off. I sign up with the "no email" option
to avoid excessive emails and just check here every day or so.
Wishing everyone a great New Year and success on all their Bolger
projects.

Good question Lynn, I cannot say with any degree of authority
whether or not it is the "same procedure", not having seen plans for
HAWKEYE, but I would suspect that Bolger could offer up a similar
device to dampen the expected slapping and pounding from the exposed
flat bottom of HAWKEYEs' hull.
In the case of WINDERMERE, it is all one huge developed surface for
which Bolger was mighty pleased it worked out alright upon seeing
the one on my WINDERMERE.
I know the CHAMPLAIN, a smaller version of the WINDERMERE model, now
comes with a fillet piece option/retro-fit on the plans.Perhaps not
quite as sexy as the one on WINDERMERE, but certainly useful in
smoothing out the waves.
A fax or snail mail query to them will be the best way to find out
the possiblities.

I just ordered plans for it from Mr. Bolger. I read the following C/P
from another forum:
Quote:
"I was also wondering if this boat has a Windermere type hull bottom
with the box keel covered with fillets at the bow and a layer of
plywood on the bottom to form an arc. I never cared for the first
generations of the box keel because of its appearence and pounding. But
the Windermere seems to have really come a long way in design since
boats like Hawkeye and Micro-trawler."
Does anyone know what it means when it says "box keel covered with
fillets at the bow and a layer of plywood on the bottom to form an arc"?
I was just curious to know if pounding is a serious problem with
Hawkeye, and if minor modifications can be made to improve it?
Thanks, Lynn

Does anyone have any study plans or sketches of Hawkeye? There seems
to be very little info anywhere on this design, but the few pictures
available I have seen lead me to think it is close to ideal for what I
am looking for. I need something light and trailerable which I can

Dear Bolger and Associates,
I think I'd like to build a Hawkeye. I've read about it in BWAOM. Would a
50HP motor be way out of line? I'd like to be able to pull a single
skiier/wakeboarder/inner tuber/etc... I wouldn't be running the thing
wide open into a big chop. I imagine a modern 2-stroke 50 wouldn't weigh
much more than the "old derated 25" you used on your test boat. Using
Nissan as an example, their 25HP motor weighs ~100 lbs, the 50HP motor
weighs ~150lbs.
I'm looking for a general purpose trailerable boat to be used for fishing
and goofing off.
If you think the Haweye is suitable, let me know the price of plans
(including shipping) and your mailing address and I'll mail a check.
If you'd like to recommend a different design, feel free.
Thanks in advance,
John Harper
