Isn't beer one of the approved methods of providing positive buoyancy
IN crew members? Since Birdwatcher relies on the crew to provide
stability, it's only logical that crewmwbers should also be buoyant...

Notice posted in BW "Crew members who vent buoyancy without the
Captain's permission will walk the plank"

Maybe to make it unsinkable?
Is this Birdwatcher actually a foam cored fibreglass version or is it incorporating 'new' Bolger features (as in Birdwatcher II specifications) to provide positive buoyancy in the unlikely event of a complete swamping, + thermal insulation and sound deadening?

I think a strip-planked or cold-molded round bottom Birdwatcher styled craft sheathed with fibreglass with either a Solent lug yawl (with jib) or sloop rig would be a great daysailer, campcruiser/weekender at about 27' x 6' 9" with either a very small inboard with folding prop or a 4-6HP 4 stroke outboard for auxillary power. The styling should be similar to Birdwatcher but even ''racier'' and sleek.

I know about the "Jochems" Schooner and "Berengaria"(BWAOM) but does any body know if Bolger has designed a craft like what I've described above? I know he's done a roundbottom version of Black Gauntlet, many years ago. My father at one stage was semi-seriously considering building it, but due to lack of finances at the time decided against it. Also I don't think he really liked the idea of leeboards, especially for the choppy and rough conditions we get here in Tasmania quite often during summer.

If it's built as foam core, it's easier to laminate the foam to the exterior ply first, then attach to the frames to get a nice fair curve going. What you see is the boat laying on it's side with the inside layer of plywood being clued to the foam. The bags are probably filled with sand but some people will use beans because they are cleaner. You can get 100 lbs. of beans cheap.

It's not easy to vacuum form building this way so beans work great.

This is a favorite method of foam core construction among the canoe builders I've met.

Anyone want to guess what the paper bags are for?
Maybe a school field trip came to the boat shop, and they stored their
lunch bags in the hull for the day?

stumped,

Justin,
Weights to hold the foam in place while gluing.

Rotate the picture clockwise 90 degrees and it will become apparent.

The picture should actually be rotated 90 degrees, and it looks like
they are weighting down the foam to the outer shell. I guess they
then lay down fiberglass over the foam, creating the inner fiberglass
surface.

Is this how a foamcore boat is built? I recall seeing pics of a
Dovekie being built this way.

Someone had sent me pics of a BW called Poco, quite a long time ago.
I posted pics to the bolger4 groups file section.

It apperas to be Airex foam cored, with an aluminum deck structure.
The upper deck line has been altered to make it look more sleek, but
I don't know how it affects the boats performance in a knockdown. I
think it looks quite a bit nicer.

Anyone know whose boat this is? I'll remove the files after a week or
so, as I don't know who took them, so do not have permission.
