of the jib. all done by the forard hand . there is no forestay as
such so you cant really set the tension that tight on the jib if its
rigged with the clubboom.I've never bothered to set them as we dont
push the boat that hard.
Today whilst rooting through my "sail loft" today I found a small
kite so next weekend I'll set it as a staysail and let you know the
results. I suspect it will be more of a fun addition than a sports
pack item.
the FS sails quite well without its jib in most conditions.
and although the boat appears undercanvassed, the boat is very easy
to power along . dont forget youve got clipper hull measurments of
lenght =6x width.ie long and slippery. cheers Paul
I sail every week on a Farr 33 with running backstays and those
things are the biggest pain in the neck there is!
You're gonna need competent crew to make it work right if you go
that route...

Did you find the picture you mentioned on the net?
Any link or can you post it?

I've been thinking of adding a flying jib to the Folding Schooner I
am building by adding a bowsprit just like on the Light Schooner...

Anybody else heard of a Light or Folding Schooner rigged that way?
Would it make it better upwind?

Thanks

Thankyou all for your input so far :). It will certainly prove
usefull. I have one other question and that involves a photo that i
have seen of a Bolger Light Schooner rigged as a cutter. Any ideas as
to what it may sail like compared to the normal rig of the BLS?

Why would you want to do that?

I guess there are several variants of staysail schooner, so I am not
quite sure what you have in mind. the last time I took a look at the
idea, I noticed that there is really no good way to sheet the
staysails, except perhaps on a beat. On any kind of reach or run,
all the good sheeting points are off the boat somewhere to leeward.
The sails will be flying with far too much curve in the them if they
are sheeted anywhere on the hull.

Bolger's oft-repeated critique of the staysail schooner is that it
is a variant of the taughtly stayed cutter, and demands high
tensions in the rig. I don't know if the hull or spars would be up
to in on an extended basis.

As to the trapezes, a lot of parts have to be up to it: mast steps,
mast partners, masts, etc.

Peter
Hey,
That sounds like another South Ozy. I live in Blackwood and sail mostly at Clayton just up the road from Goolwa and I like the idea of the Bolger Light Schooner.

Subject: [bolger] Light schooner with trapeze?

I have been looking over the light schooner plans for a while now and
plan to have a look at the Flying Tadpole down at Goolwa if she
competes this year. My question is, with the additions of stays to the
masts, could a trapeze be rigged for a crew of 3 or 4, with the aim of
getting that bit more speed out of the light schooner under a full
press of canvas?

just add the trapeze,as weight on the trap will be taking strain off
the mast. the foremast should have running backstays anyway for
tensioning the jib upwind,.
i dont know if will convert to speed as the sharpie schooners sail
better heeled, and the light scooner is real fast anyway.you may gain
more by paying attention to good tactics and sail setting.
Cheers paul
one posts enough surely?

EDIT:
Also, would it be possible to rig the light schooner as a staysail
schooner without completely unbalancing everything?
