Re: [bolger] Solution 48

If it has a 30 HP sabb, maybe it was modified to be a sail assist instead?

Well to be honest, I don't think any of us would be familiar with the modifications made to the design. You'd need to speak with the builder of the boat to get that information.

Hi mark,
Susanne who participates on this list may be able to help you with a set of plans. The boat you have was outlined in a book called "Different Boats" published in 1981. You can get a copy of the book from Amazon, but it is out of print so it will be from 3rd party retailers. There are currently 18 copies of the book for sale at amazon's site at the time I checked.

Hope this helps,
Scot

You might want to take a look thru the catalog at
www.tantonyachts.com. YM Tanton has designed quite a number of boats
in the 30-35 foot range with liveaborad potential. One that intrigues
me is #946 (Sea Shell) which has about the same accomodation as the AS-
29, but in a more traditional package. I suppose she would be 50% more
expensive than AS-29, which shows the efficency of the PCB sharpies.

Aside from presumed ease of construction, I think the shapies is an
odd choice for a liveaboard. A shorter, fatter boat will probably work
better with respect to head room and general layout. In fact, logic
would send you to a pram design like PCB's Liveaboard Schooner.
I'm following the group's discussion of large liveaboard sharpies
with quite a bit of interest. I can't wait to hear more from Bob and
Sheila on their LooseMoose3. I've added some of the pics I've
gleaned off the net of the Solution 48 and placed them in a folder
in the BolgerCartoons group. M'lady and I are looking for a shoal
draft liveaboard to move onto sooner rather than later, and the 48
looks like it could go together like one of Brent Swain's Origami
Boats. I wonder if it could be done frameless like Brent does his -
just welding on tabs for ply bulkheads - to eliminate the incursion
of cold and heat into the interior. I suppose Brent or Phil could
give us some answers in that reguard.

Neither Brent nor Bolger are fans of the junk rig although I'd like
to see how it'd work with a boat like this. I'm trying to work up a
3/4" = 1 foot scale RC model of the Solution 48 to try out different
rigs with. In a full scale version, the masts and rigging'd have to
be kept as light as possible, but should be doable with a fully
ballasted (loaded to the gills with rice and beans) boat. For the
model I may use 4mm Plasticor with an actual steel centerboard.
Bolger in his book Different Boats says the full size centerboard
weighs in at 955 pounds. With the CB down and 6800 pounds of 1/2
inch bottom plate, along with all of one's belongings, she should be
able to take a pretty good sized rig.

Seattle
Solution 48 is in Different Boats. It was designed as a shallow-
drafted steel liveaboard, cheap and easy to build for its size.
Displacement is 10 long tons.

The rig is most unusual. Both masts are on tabernacles. It's
technically a schooner, I suppose, as the forward mast is the shorter
of the two, although the mainsail is smaller in area than the
foresail. The main is a triangular sail on a yard -- a gunter rig.
The foresail is a balanced lug.

The internal layout is similar to Dawn Treader. There is a smallish
doghouse or wheelhouse.

I don't have a scanner, but I'm happy to provide any other technical
details of the design.

JB,
Dawn Treader is supposed to be the same shape as
Solution 48, different rig and power. See files in Bolger4.
