Re: Micro/Lug Rigs - Jason
Yes, Oink will be on her mooring, when the weights are found by the
mooring contractor.............grrrrr.
The rig I was looking at had a higher centre than yours, probably
because using the mizzen meant having the total area with a shorter
main boom, the sail had to be taller. I think your sketch looks good.
As far as trailing to sailing is concerned, Dereck would be more
able to answer you. If the rig is left with all ropes connected when
laid up, and bundled neatly it will not be too bad. But the
sheetlets etc would all have to be slackened off correctly to allow
the main mast to be raised. You can't rig them later. To rig the
ropes every time at the launch pad would take ages, and you would
have to be careful not to miss one.
Here is where your proposed lug would win hands down, especially
without a mizzen. A more practical trailer proposition in my opinion.

Thanks again Don-
I liked the looks of the curve in the luff on the balanced lug. I
converted all those measures into something i can understand
(imperial system...so dumb) and you seem to have come up pretty
close to what i have found. Kinda suprised the lug raises the ce.
The martha jane lug is a little shorter/longer so it's less
pronounced....even though the rig is several feet shorter than sprit
or C. Gaffer it still put the ce up a foot. I doubt it will matter
as 200sqft. is a big rig for a 15footer, ballast or not, i'm
guessing it will have a reef in all but the lightest breezes
I'm under the impression oink will live on a mooring so this is of
less concern for you..... How long do you think it will take to rig
the chinese gaff from trailer to sailer?

Hi Jason, as you are showing some interest in a lug rig for your
Navigator, I have posted on my website a couple of lug alternatives
I was working on before seeing the Navigator plan.
One is a standing lug with light mast, stayed. This was because the
standard micro mast is quite heavy, and a used alloy mast very cheap.
The second is more like yours, but using the mizzen.
The height of the centre of effort was interesting.
I sent them to John Welsford, for him to do a final plan...he was
busy and would take time, but said they looked about right.
Sail areas are in metric. Sorry the scans had to be bigger for
clarity.
