Re: [bolger] Re: June Bug stuff
I built an Elegant Punt with BC Pine. Although the sheets did not lay
flat, they were fine once they were part of the boat assembly. No
checking, however, the boat is less than a year old and is stored
inside. Also, as noted previously, it is very heavy. I have not
weighed the punt, but it is significantly heavier than my Michalak Toto
built of a similiar amount of Luaan ply.

I agree that the BC pine looks better than a lot of fir. The BC 1/4 " sheeets I've seen around here are all warped; the 1/2 " seems to lie flat. Has anyone built a boat out of BC pine ply? How did it turn out? Any experience with checking?

I think BC yellow pine plywood is an excellent choice. I would use it
over Fir AC. The AC I have seen has been full of voids with a very
bad C surface. Most yellow pine BC has very few voids and a much
better C side. It also is harder and more durable. The only drawback
is that it weights about 30% to 50% more. This is due to the fact
that yellow pine is more dense along with the fact that it has fewer
voids and is slightly thicker. I know many people who use BC. BC ply
in many parts of the country has replaced AC Fir due to its superior
quality.
Just my two cents.

we had to do repairs, but all the knots are on the inside so can be
hidden. we bog and paint the outside every 2 years now. The bottom is
AC but was coated in epoxy. After this boat dies I intend to cut the
perfect bottom off and build something else out of it.

come back in a day or two when they're selling that pile.Look around

I'd like, if I may, to share my experience of building and using a June Bug for 4 years. I used 1/4" lauan ply and Weldwood-type glue. The fir bits were pretty poor wood and rather undersized in section.
The recurring problem I had with it was failure of the joints between the fir and the ply - probably because of the Weldwood glue - This occurred along the gun'ls, and where the thwart-frame joins the bottom. I also boxed in the ends and suffered with leaks when the box ends parted company with the bottom. Similarly the ply butt joint on the bottom gave out eventually.
Maybe the Weldwood was a bit old - but it seemed to mix OK and held up for a while. Also, with the undersized fir, flexing was pretty excessive and gluing surfaces not as big as they should have been.
The ply, despite being dirt cheap and painted (no epoxy coat), lasted just fine.
Anyway, despite these cautionary words, I'd like to sing the praises of the design - light, fast, burdensome, stable and great under oars.
Build it strong, and it'll last you a lot longer than 4 years!

Plywood isn't all the same, one manufacturers BC might be as good as another
ones AC, no way to tell without seeing, look for voids and patches which
will show through your paint job unless you glass it.
Shame to do all that work and then decide you should have bought the best
you could afford.
