That's a problem we all have. You either have to go get it elsewhere
or have it shipped in. Are you aware of this discussion group?

Your query will likely get answered there.

Good luck, Nels

Depot people have never heard of MDO. I live at Waterloo and a local
plywood specialty store carries a few choices for marine plywood,
but they don't seem to be any better than Okoume or Meranti in terms
of price or visual quality.

Thanks for the advice!

How about sapele, does anyone have experience with that? Woodenboat uses sapele for
their boat kits:

I used okoume when I built a 13-foot Joel White Pooduck daysailer a couple of years ago.
Seems like great stuff, but I must say it was quite a bit more brittle than the fir ply I used
to build a Long Micro 10 years ago. That is, a piece perhaps 1" wide and 6" long (3/8"
thick) would easily snap without much "give" whereas a similiar piece of fir ply had a lot
more "give" before snapping. I don't know if it's important, but it always stuck in my
mind.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Dan

I forget now what you are planning build? Many of us share the
opinion that MDO is the best way to go. That is what several of the
most skilled builders on the group have had success with.

My choice will be the MDO for a Long Micro and I plan to get it from
Calgary Alberta. But if I had the money I might use the meranti. The
main difference in price between it and Okoume is due to the Lloyds
thing. But if you are glassing it is all going to be protected from
moisture anyway.

Seems the three things to look for are the more plys the better, and
they should all be the same thickness. The two outer layers should be
1.5mm and there should be no edge voids. Any plwood that has those
characteristics is probably going to last for many years if the
construction is sound and all edges are protected.

Cheers, Nels
Well Ben you've said it. Okoume is lighter, Meranti is stiffer. Not to
mention that there are different manufacturers. I've used Brynzeel
Okoume and Okoume from France to the 1088 spec. and Meranti from
India, Phillipines etc all just fine. If you are anywhere near
Charlotte MI check out Johnsons for price. The veneer on the french
okoume is thinner than Brynzeel but so is the price.

Based on their spec. both Okoume and Meranti marine plywood seems
very similar, but there's a huge price difference. For a 1/2" 4x8
sheet BS1088 standard ply, Noah lists the Okoume at $94, versus the
Meranti at $64. The Okoume is Loyds certified; the Meranti
is 'pending certification' (it's been pending for years, as far as I
can tell). I suppose ultimately you get what you pay for, and for a
50% price gap you would think there's got to be a clear benefit with
Okoume. Okoume is lighter, 30 lb vs 40 lb. Is there anything else?
Experience/opinion much appreciated!!
